OK - No real way to introduce this, but...

Has anyone got any tips on how I can accurately test the resistance of a chicken?

When you put multimeter probes on something like your skin, the reading depends on how hard you press.

Is there some way to get this variation out of the picture?

This has to do with smoking food in a BBQ. It seems that there is a stage called brining. Brining adds flavour and moisture. It's often salt and sugar mixed with water and some herbs or whatever.

As far as I can tell, brining increases the salt content of the cells in your food, then as the various bits of the chicken (or whatever) pull the salt from the brine, at some point (a point unknown) any given cell might be saltier than the now depleted brine. The result is they suck in more water.

If you could know when this was happening, you could in theory dump the brine, and add a flavoured liquid, that would be sucked into the cells.

Perhaps.

Maybe I can measure the liquid instead of the chicken and see when the solution changes.

I hate it when I cant think straight.

The chicken should increase it's conductivity for a few hours, then start to decrease. That's the point that I want to detect.

If I measure the liquid's resistance, I should see it decrease up to the point I'm trying to identify, but then I cant figure out what would happen.

Anyone? Anyone?

Brain scans use flat circular conductors, with a conductive gel applied to them.

I'd also try using probes that penetrate the skin a certain depth, perhaps a set distance apart...

Quite interesting idea!

See... I saw the title and had visions of a chicken version of

Get some metal tongs, 2 sets, wrap a large elastic around each set about halfway along, then use them as your electrodes. One on each leg or wing would give fairly consistent measurements.

Then you'd have to watch and record - will salt in the cells actually change the resistance? Can you measure while the chicken is IN the brine or will that just give you the liquid resistance?

So, measure the chook, put it in the brine with electrodes on and watch the meter. If it changes you're measuring brine not chook, so you will need to pull the first one out on a regular basis to see how the chook resistance changes.

I'm always amazed when I get a response to my questions.

From this end, it looks like I'm just chucking ridiculous jibberish out into the ether, and getting gold back :)

:laughing3:

Perfect :)

I think pure water conducts less than salty water. Actually I think pure pure water doesnt conduct at all. Dont quote me on that. Actually dont quote me on anything :)

I forgot that song. I like it when I forget things and then have them re-introduced.

My mum would give my Grandma a 1/4 of a glass of apple juice when ever she got distressed in late stage Alzheimer's. Each and every time she would get really stoked and ask what it was, then ask if she would be able to have it again someday.

It was her all time favourite food, and she got to taste it for the first time a dozen times a day. Sometimes Alzheimer's can be fun.

Cows with guns.

Thanks.

And Bullwinkle, for you if i was there I would let you stick probes in me to check out your ideas if the chickens were not available!! I love chickens and they give me such love at BYAP. I thank every chook for the egg they provide. Thankyou Chookalooka I say!!
