hi Faye, those berries look like there from a plant we call "bred ma teh" pronounced like its spelt, thats what we call it in French-Mauritian, the new leaves are eaten like spinach, i like it lightly sautéed with onion and as a side with a rice and fish dish.
most people think its poisons, even my wife thought that, and she freaked out when i ate a hand full of the dark purple berries!

I think what Faye has in her growbed is Solanum nigrum http://florabase.dec.wa.gov.au/browse/profile/7022 which is also known as deadly nightshade. What Yavimaya and Obelix are refering to is Atropa belladonna http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atropa_belladonna which is also known as deadly nightshade . Both are from the Solanaceae family. Faye is correct in that the ripe berries of Solanum nigrum are non toxic.

Now Bender, this is bringing back memories of my failings in Pharmacognosy tutorials with Dr Bob Longmore... feint memories of nearly 15 years ago, but momories none the less. The differences in appearance seem pretty minor but the consequences of mistaken identity are, well, not minor!!!
Even though retired now, I would be surprised if Dr Bob hasn't poked his nose in here at some time or another. Until someone like that mops their head over I'd still say be very very careful :)

maybe Faye can take some detailed pictures of the leaves, the flowers, the fruit, the habit of the bush and then we can make a proper diagnosis?

It's a very difficult weed to get rid of Faye especially if you allow it to set and ripen berries. This is obviously how it reproduces and spreads easily. It get it out ASAP. It's really not worth keeping it.

Hi Faye, definitely part of the fan club, I have taken great delight in reading all 106 pages,I love the fact of how positive and upbeat it has been,it is truly inspirational for all of us just starting out and can a say a bench mark for what is achievable. Many thanks Faye I am now truly addicted.

Ah thankyou Dasboot, I noticed you are in Thailand, I was there last week and was excited to see blue barrels and ibcs on a few occasions. I guess I'm not your average tourist. The fish spas also put a smile on my face. We stayed in Bangkok overnight and visited Tiger zoo where we fed the fish with milk bottles, lol. I have video of both experiences too.
When we returned home after 2 1/2 weeks I enquired how all the animals were? Yeah they're all fine.
What about my fish, I asked? Laura said "I forgot you had fish: :support:
Doh! Anyway on my return in the middle of the night, as you do, I checked the water level and after fighting my way through the tomatoes and foliage in the dark, things sounded right and nothing was floating. I could see lots of okra fruits and the odd tomato. Easter will be a good time to catch up on the gardening and topping up the autum seedlings ahead of my 7th annual trout growing season. Did I tell you I love trout and I can't wait.
My poor system has taken a back seat over the last six months, as I have hardly been home due to both happy holidays and sad times. Now I am ready to get back in to it and a box of fresh seeds arrived today  This year I expect to get more productive so get ready to see more food photography.

Bangkok is quite a city to be sure,I love it's not stop vibrancy 24/7 a little different to where we are which is basically in the middle of nowhere, just mountains and paddy fields, the paddy fields aren't on the mountains but give the Thais have a chance and they would find a way.
The blue barrels got collected yesterday cutting and cleaning today,8 growbeds in the waiting, steel arrived today, going to use this for the frame,Thai wood is very expensive now and is far from any decent quality,so square section steel the stuff used for roofing is the support choice. Still struggling on grow media, I have been told if I want it,to go down to the local river and collect it myself,oh well could be plan.
I will post pictures, but iam using a 3G dongle, when I tried it just went on for ever trying to download,so gave up. Looking forward to your future post Faye.

A better and more loved home would be hard to find

May your rhubarb provide you many and bountiful and most importantly a RED harvest . :)

I find that particular rhubarb gives good colour , sweet stems with length and leaves about 1/2 the size of the previosly banished green stem one I had before :thumbright:

Ohh , and your most welcome, :D
