hi everyone.

i have been interested in aquaponics for some time now but it seems for the moment a large system is out of the question. trouble is i have the itch and really need to scratch it hahah.

so here is what i do have. a small 50l fish tank. 5 comets 3 guppies and 2 sucker catfish, the tank is happy and after testing i have no problematic ammonia or nitrites or anything but my nitrates are high which i suspect means im ready to start adding plants. just wondering if i have enough fish?

i guess the only way to find out for sure is to try and grow something in there and see what happens.

Welcome stutter, a small system is a great way to wet your feet. Get some plants in there straight away

I am a total newbie from the illawarra area south of sydney I am still trying to get all the info I can so when i do start I dont make too many mistakes..... If anyone is within striking range I would love to see a working system and pick your brains

What have you got in mind for your grow beds and media Etc

i still havnt decided on a simple flood and drain or a chift pist system. grow bed will be small to start, im thinking of using one of those old recycling tubs they used to use for recycling pick up. probably a simple flood and drain or maybe a chift pist, im thinking flood and drain would be easier and i could have my grow bed up higher where i could get to it easier.

growing media will be hydroton rocks

i ended up going with a simple flood and drain. its a 50l FT with a 50lt GB, got a few comets and a few guppies in there.

using existing fishtank water etc it seems i have skipped the need to cycle as my ammonia levels peaked at around .25 and dropped back down to 0 all within 24 hrs.

Nope... doesn't mean you're cycled... just means you're "cycled" to level of ammonia present...

once again thank you rupert i will remain on high alert.
