Does anyone know if leeks can be grown in an ap system in North Queensland (Townsville)
I have had zero success with them in the dirt and as I love them but not not the prices I really would love to grow them.
(no system yet)

:wave1: They grow fantastic in my system in Perth, WA. They will take a while to grow and now is the time to get them in but no more soil between the layers when harvested and self seed if you let some go to seed :thumbright:

I had a pretty poor seedling survival rate after I planted mine..I planted at the start of summer, not sure if that is OK.
I now have 2-3 left but those seem to be quite healthy and chugging along.
I have been meaning to ask about leeks for a while now, thanks ! :)

It took my AP leeks a whole year to finally seed, then I had zero success with germinating those seeds, so I'm back to growing bought leek seedlings in my AP system.

I got mine from green harvest and they are going ape. Good germination in $7 propagator, good growth in grow bed. The grow time is much shorter in my system than quoted on the pack.

They and all other sorts of onions go nuts in all my systems. I have a constant supply of spring onions and if I let them go they get as big as leeks. Leeks get massive
I think Faye pointed out that if you harvest them by cutting through them at the base, then they will sprout a new leek from the stump. Havent tried this but will

Crikey Marc, that aint good. Are onion aphids like normal ones that are farmed by ants. I get those here on various plants and try to control the ants and have a 5L pump up sprayer that I hit them with just water.

All aphids are "farmed" by ants to some extent but these I rarely see ants attending them. I Have fairly good ant control, well as best you can in the bush!

The Aphids are little black or very dark purple ones and multiply like mad; even the ladybird larvae can't keep up with them.

I have had these pests since day 1!

The only 2 pests I can't manage are these onion aphids and the cabbage aphid. :cry:

Build it and they will come!! :evil:

Ive had great success with leaks in my AP.

On the subject of ants... whats the best method of control besides flooding the bed.

Baits are good - like antex - non toxic and very effective in combination with a barrier treatment like bifenthrin
