"From what I gather, it seems like it's too drastic a change from the Queensland weather which is where I bought them from. "

My bet is on huge temp swings in such a small volume of water.
I have 100 SP from livefish in QLD, and im in Melbourne (cooler than Adelaide) and mine are growing great guns.
I also have a 4,500 litre tank so fast temperature swings dont really exist.

I'd ditch the steel drum ASAP, jump on gumtree and find an old $10 bathtub or something..

I'd even salt the water to 2ppt to reduce the stress from the rest..

Good to hear that the SP are fine in the cooler temp. What size are yours?

I spent yesterday rearranging the system. I've removed the steel drum and I have them in a plastic tub. +1 for removing the steel drum but -1 for a smaller volume of water.

I'm setting up a fish tank inside with the heater to save as many as I can and hopefully next year they'll be able to be outside.

Definately salt the tank. I might even suggest 3-4 parts just in case...
1kg Pool salt from bunnings per 1000ltr = 1 part. Just be sure to disolve it in some tank water first as I've heard that it can 'burn' the fish if not disolved properly. :dontknow:

It seems that you have been well bitten by the AP bug.

Welcome Steve :wave1:

And I agree, this is a wonderful forum with fantastic members that always want to see you succeed

PS I know you've been busy but where are the 'Pics' :?: :?: :?:

If you can get to Mt Compass or my work in Norwood (this week for Norwood only), I can give you a 200 litre Blue Barrel that may help

Let me know :)

Thanks for your offer of the blue barrel Erich, but I found an even better solution. I started a new thread about it here: http://www.backyardaquaponics.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=35&t=15725#p379720

Basically just bought a 1000 litre rainwater tank for $201 and SA Water will give me $200 rebate = a $1 tank with free delivery. YIPPPPPEEEEE

Edit.... stainless doesnt rust as such but it can get a build up of red oxide. Relatively harmless. Try stick a magnet to your drum.... if it sticks, its steel.... and your in trouble.

304 Stainless is magnetic if it has been cold worked, eg springs.

Just a quick update. The 12 silver perch that survived (out of 25) are now inside in an aquarium with a heater. They're all swimming happily. I'll see how they go with a constant temperature. Perhaps by next summer they'll be big enough to go into the outside tanks.

The outside system (with tub now, not the steel drum) still has the original 4 goldfish.

Thank you to everyone for your input.
