I'm quite partial to homebrewing CRF, although so far I've mostly taken the easy option with beer kits and the like. I'd love to grow my own hops but I believe Perth is too hot to grow most of the varieties.
Yep the govt taxes the bollocks of alcohol, wine can be reasonably cheap, but I think they are looking at upping the tax on that too, it is our countries number one method of reducing vice related harm - just keep on taxing :upset:

Ok so I have been noticing how much you all pay for beer, how many of you are home brewers?

A growing number of people are becoming homebrewers.

Homebrewing allows you to tweak the formula so that you brew something you like.
Someone else may not like it, but that doesn't matter because you are brewing for yourself.
And therefore if done properly your homebrew will always be better than store bought.

Is wine cheaper than beer there? What about liq too?

no if it's drinkable

yes if it's total rubbish.

CityRootsFarm wrote:
And what the heck is the tax rate for that stuff there?

Depends on the amount of alcohol and the classification of the drink.
Government tax schedule.

Quote:
Tariff item 1, sub item 1.10

Beer exceeding 3.5% by volume of alcohol packaged in an individual container not exceeding 48 litres

$45.08 per litre of alcohol calculated on that alcohol content by which the percentage by volume of alcohol of the goods exceeds 1.15

For a decent beer the tax rate is $45.08 per litre of alcohol

ie: for a 5% beer, 20 litres of beer equals one litre of alcohol

tax on 20 litres of 5% beer is $45.08

OR 75 cents per 330ml stubby.

cheers Lou

Now can you guys sell home brews? I know here you can sell home brew a buddy of mine is a home brewer and can sell his beer with little problems from the gov because he only sells a small amount like under 100 cases (2400) bottles. I want to home brew I just haven't yet. So what does a Guinness run there?

Yea, we have just started whole grain brewing. Its a pretty lengthy process but the beer is really good quality.

We have some local brewing clubs that sell their beer. I dont think we would ever get to that stage but we give a lot to friends etc.

@Mantis - nice one :headbang:

I often think I would like to get into making mash and all that jazz, but I couldn't be stuffed to be honest. Just pour a kit, and brewing sugar or malt. Maybe one or two flavour enhancers, wait a week, bottle, and let the bottles improve on the shelf.

I can bottle 15 plastic 700ml king browns, 5x2l coke bottles wash my kit and put another brew down, all in less than an hour.

2 slabs of beer (23l) costs me about $20.

I normally have a range of packaged muck in the fridge (Carltons through to James Squires), and a few different brews as well. When the boys come around after squash for a few hands of poker and a few ales, the home brew always goes first. Normally have a few lagers or pale ales, then finish off with a stout or two.

Only thing I would change would be to have a couple of kegs on the go. That would be close to my ultimate. Evan just a few party kegs would do. Would need a few as I like having a variety of beers to try over the space of a week.

Last night cracked a European Lager (Coopers). Its still a bit green at only 10 weeks old, but it was smooth. Nice small bubbles, good head. Tasted good for the whole 2l. Better than alot of the premium beers imported. Definatly better than some of the $12-15 pints I've tried at some of the belgium Beer Cafe's. Funny though. I was so thirsty, I went all in including the dregs. It then tasted like some of the heiferveissen (spelling?) that I have tried over in Germany. Glad footy is back on TV at night! Need to get a TV out in the patio. The nights are just perfect now.

Can't wait for it to mature a bit more. I reccon it beats my English Bitter(Coopers).

Thank goodnees the temps are now heading south. Will need to go hard for the next month or two getting the stocks back up.

Hi Dr Bee

I think it's horses for courses, you brew what you like to drink.

My 23litre batch cost $32.00

grain $15.00
hops $10.00
yeast $7.00

I started with kits then went to Dry Malt extract but I think once you go to all grain you can notice
the difference.

I find it fun experimenting with the different hops and yeasts and the multiple grain combinations.

cheers Lou

I would love to home brew but for me its not to save money but just for the fun of it. I get most of what I drink for free  but I think it would be awesome to do still.

I agree with trouts comments. I still do a LME now and then but make a hop addition to snazz it up, there is nothing wrong with a tin mix but I found the whole grain brewing a bit more of a hobby now as I do it with a couple of mates and it makes a pretty good day. The beer is better but going down the whole grain road is fairly expensive too so it takes time before it starts paying off.

How do you get free alcohol CRF if you dont mind me asking... that sound much easier :D
