I picked up a month old entrepreneur magazine today and read a four page story about "pod-ponics" - a guy basically doing hydroponics in conex boxes.

I picked up a second magazine (INC.) and read an article about the exact same concept but different company.

I visited my favorite magazines website, The Atlantic, and found this...

You guys have been in the game a while... are you noticing an exponential increase in the amount of people paying attention to aquaponics/urban farming lately?

This was all in one day... coincidence, synchronicity, dumb luck? I feel a tipping point coming...

Haha not an unknown pursuit anymore.

We had this article in our local paper on Monday, got word of it one day after telling some dinner guests what I was doing with the water tank in the back yard:

Too funny... I just found the same article!!
Put it in Int'l systems...
Point is, AP IS the way we'll have to go-- we have to reduce our carbon consumption, protect our water supply... and
live and feed our families.

The up-side is amazing... there really isn't a downside... except getting started.

Well you wont improve your carbon footprint... by trying to grow indoors, under lights... or pumping water metres into the air.. from a shipping container to a rooftop greenhouse....... for the sake of a couple of lettuce sandwichs....

AP has it's place.. and purpose.. in the backyard.. for so many reasons....

And it may have a place in commercial food production... just not on the scale usually depicted...

That's for sure... anyone that's ever googled "aquaponics"... is now an expert...

I loved this bit... from the article...

Quote:
According to traditional farming practices, one lettuce plant needs 1.5-square-foot of soil for a 60-day harvestable growth cycle.

"In the aquaponic growth bed, we will grow six times more lettuce in the same square footage with half the growth time needed," Dickson said. "This equates to 12 plants harvested in aquaponic farming versus one in traditional farming."

Tilapia and catfish also grow faster in aquaponic conditions, Dickson said.

6 times the number of lettuce.. in the same footprint..... nah....

And fish grow faster in aquaponic conditions... really... compared to what.... nah....
