I feel like such a dits, I am sure you are correct about it being deadly nightshade. If it was at the shop 2km away it would ge getting hammered by the nasty 28 spot ladybird.

Bundybear your mystery plant could also be Jerusalem artichokes as they look very similar.

This is a pic of the flowers they should be pretty good to identify if it is, but I am just a chemist not botanist so plant I'd isn't my area, uses and toxicities are more up my alley.

I asked somewhere, once, about bee keeping... guess it got lost in the ether.

Since we will produce poison-free, I think it is only fair to get some local hives. I'm in a 'yard police' neighborhood... but I know they're out there somewhere... and If I can make a happy home for a group of bees, hooray.

I'm delighted to find your site, Bill-- I don't thin our weather is quite as bad as yours (I loved the graphic!! When I did my training at Ft. Wood, I swore we did all four seasons every week!) I have to disagree, Belladonna is highly regarded as extremely toxic, used to be one of the main poisons used back in medieval times to my knowledge.

I think what Faye has in her growbed is Solanum nigrum http://florabase.dec.wa.gov.au/browse/profile/7022 which is also known as deadly nightshade. What Yavimaya and Obelix are refering to is Atropa belladonna http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atropa_belladonna which is also known as deadly nightshade . Both are from the Solanaceae family. Faye is correct in that the ripe berries of Solanum nigrum are non toxic.

I was really trying to give my plant the benefit of the doubt here. Thinking that I may have planted chilli seeds or even a seedling in that bed and especially after comparing the growth to the chiili plants at the shop, can you see why I was mistaken. Of course that was until the berries began to form in clumps and there was no denying it.

I will probably leave my weed in the bed until the barra come out, as it's not doing any harm. Soon it will be time for trout and I will be wanting to plant all my autumn seedlings and winter crops.

Not a great photo I know, but this guy does the rounds and has been a regular visitor in the afternoons this week. They are very welcome at our property, just wish he would eat a few more rats before they get any more of my passionfruit.

Atleast get rid of all of the berries before they ripen.
They may not be deadly to certain animals, they are spread very easily and are everywhere in melbourne.

As to it not being belladonna, i certainly would never risk eating anything that even looks like it, just like i wouldnt try to use to as a hallucinogen even though it can be, its so risky its not worth even considering.
Death is the only thing worthy of this plant.
