She's a bit flash, mate.
The chooks are going to think they've moved to Peppy Grove when they get in there.

third set of chooks?

how many years have you being having hens? they usually die of old age or the fox before they stop laying completely. :P

chooks wouldn't much help in aquaponics unless you wanted to clean out and turn over a grow bed. slugs and snails like to come out at night when the chickens are sleeping. on the other hand they will find anything hiding at ground level. :)

That's a very good point re: night time :)

When I planned my veggie garden (in dirt) at the property I used to live on in the country, I made a run that went all around the four plots of raised beds. Each bed was surrounded by chicken wire, and had a hatch that could be open from the chook run. That way one of the crop rotation steps was to let the chickens in to the fallow bed to scratch around and fertilise the soil. At the end there was a nesting box.

The plan was to have the chickens live in the nesting box, the run surrounding the garden beds, and one garden bed at any one time. Each garden bed had to be completely covered and fenced in because we had a goat, a pig, and three pet sheep that lived in the same space.

Sadly I had to move before it was finished, but on the up side, it probably wouldn't have protected against slugs and snails anyway :)

Got the front done today. Just needs a locking bolt and some sawdust, then it's time for chooks!

Any plans to automate the lock down to make it fox proof?

A chicken lock was the thing that first made me think that I needed to learn electronics from people like you.

I had some crazy plans that involved solar panels and balance beams with solar pumps and constantly overflowing buckets of water.

I swear they would have worked :)

Yep it's all designed ready to be built...

It uses exactly the same system as my aquaponics controller, just programmed for a 24 hour cycle length :-)

A luxury chicken apartment with electronic security.

I wonder if a retina scan would work on a chicken

New tenants have moved in!

Hopefully they start paying rent soon.

In other news, it turns out that the backyard chicken people are just as creative with unorthodox PVC art as we are! I made two feeders for around $20 in pvc.
