Hi guys and gals,

So we have finally settled into our little mountain retreat in the Sunshine Coast hinterland. On one of my little expeditions I found a dam that may or may not be on our side of the fence, but from the access to it as you can see I'm assuming the neighbors haven't visited it in quite a while.

So my questions are.....

How/ where do I get the water tested to see if it would be suitable for fish as is?

What do I do to it to improve the quality, to build it up to a level where it can sustain fish life?

Once I get it to a point where I can get fish in there what maintenance/ equipment do I need to keep it running smoothly?

Looks like you are going to have fun making the pond into something usable. Put some fish in cages in it and see how they do.

I think you'd have to aerate it, especially with cages... for any real number of fish... or if you were going to feed them...

If you want to treat it as a natural feed source stocking.. then the old rule of thumb was.. 1 fish for every stride around the perimeter...

But it looks pretty muddy... still and stagnant to me...

Yeah and I'm not sure how I'm going to stride around that perimeter. I'm not looking at stocking it at high levels (yet) just want to get some fish in there for later on and maybe use them for other aquaponics setup at the house. So I'll use that rule of thumb thanks.

Would an aerator or a dc pump attached to a solar panel (only working during sunlight hours presumably) provide enough aeration to get some sort of life back into it?

That is my only option for power at the site at the moment as I haven't cut a direct track from the house and even that will still be about 200 odd metres worth of cord.
