My Basil are flowering. Should I nip the flowers out, leave it alone as it is Ok or have the plants run their cycle.
If they are finished can a cutting be started?

thanks

cutting is allowed any time.... it just depends on how often you're prepared to do it.
I do it once a week and cut about three branches down from the flower bunch... that sets them back a little and causes them to grow more proper leaves before they try to start flowering again.

Just my 5cents

I honestly don't think it makes any difference...

We started off nipping the flowers but now just leave them to do their thing. The bees love it anyway.

I have about ten basil plants, all at least a foot across and two feet high. They have loads of flowers and also loads of leaves... there's only so much pesto one family can eat!

Hi Nebbian,
Makes my single stalk basil plants look like seedlings.
I am cropping tomatoes, chives and peppers at last but lost the cucumbers to the hot weather. Fish are cured of white spot and water is clear and enjoying feed time with my mates. :)
AP is a great addition to the backyard and you have had me thinking about chooks now.

I try to keep clipping the flower heads off to keep the plants going, and the taste the same. I usually just harvest the largest individual leaves but will sometimes remove a whole branch. I dry a lot of leaves for off-season and also just freeze them in zip bags as I pick them.

you could collect the seeds and make a drink out of them. They go jelly like barley

I drank a bottle of that stuff a few months back.. Quite an interesting drink.

We tip them out to encourage bushyness and more leaf production.

Fantastic to hear that your system is producing well Rod :-)

I grew up with chooks, they're a great addition to any backyard.
