WOW.. this was such an interesting, funny, confusing, helpful read...

I'd read a little, take notes, read a little, laugh... Rinse, repeat..

I've got tons of notes in my new App, Evernote (thanks for the info about it)

Look forward to spring pics..

8) That sounds pretty much like my life in general. Especially the funny/confusing part. :( And if you think mine was all that, you have GOT to read Bullwinkle's. And his blog, too...that's actually what got me into all of this to begin with.

I had big plans for getting another grow bed done in the greenhouse this week, since I'm finally enjoying a little time off work. But I derailed myself with my sudden indoor AP obsession centered around getting Henry the pleco's living situation squared away.

The greenhouse just hasn't had the same appeal with all the cold lately. Especially since the warmer water causes so much condensation that I get rained on more inside than out!

They had bare root strawberries at Wilco today, though...that might just spur me on a little bit. I need some strawberry towers so I can buy some strawberries!

Yeah, but I can't have strawberries in my bedroom, just in case BW gets his transporter figured out. Having him pop unexpectedly into my greenhouse would be one thing, but the bedroom is a whole 'nother matter.

I know exactly how you feel - I ordered 25 plants online in December and had to scurry quickly to get my NFT tubes up the past couple of weeks, as I knew they were shipping last week. All planted today, now I can't wait to start seeing some green on them...

Yes. :)

It was raining cats and dogs outside. But since I've been heating the water (an experiment to see how hard it would be to keep tilapia alive) it tends to rain a lot on the inside too, especially on cold days. I've learned to slam the door a couple of times before I go in, or I get ambushed by random surprise cold showers.

And everything is all lined up laser straight.

I was wondering about your algae doing what it's doing, and thought the light might be near ultra violet, and could be sterilizing the glass to 6 inches deep.

But I think perhaps plants like ultra violet.

:dontknow:

I like the etching theory.

And...

if it was left 3/4 full for a while before you got it, and salts formed on the upper section as the water evaporated, they may have not been washed away completely and might contribute to the different condition.

Salts would explain the defined line.

And...

Some algae exhibit self control. They release an algae inhibiting substance into their water after they go on a crazed, three day bloom bender, and as a result kill their enthusiasm for going on three day bloom benders.

Stupid algae.

Perhaps that has something to do with it. Perhaps that top section had crazy algae in the past, and it's killing itself off from the top down (the top having seen better growth in the past due to better light penetration (sometimes when I answer questions, I just start typing to see what I'll say next  ))

It makes the most sense of anything so far. Which is to say, it's the only explanation so far that approaches believability. ;)

Kind of like a lot of things that happen in the pathyphysiology of the human body. My first pathyphys instructor used to say, "Your body hates you and will kill you the first chance it gets." I was skeptical, but by the end of the second term he had me just about convinced it was true. It's amazing how quickly adaptive stuff can turn maladaptive on you. So algae could be just as smart as we are, and still be stupid. There's a scary thought.

That's actually a thing. It's called "stream of consciousness." Or something like that. Sometimes when you stop messing things up by trying to think, your brain can actually come up with some really nifty stuff. Maybe the rest of us should try doing it once in a while. :thumbright:
