Not quite the one from red alert, but you can have one.

I should clarify that. Wireless power transmission is certainly possible. Hooking up an antenna to a battery and running your AP is bogus. A transformer has no electrical connection and you have seen hundreds of those. In the next 12 months a lot of the flagship smart phones will use wireless charging. There are ones that can already do it.

Scientists are developing sensors now that dont need a battery, there is enough wireless radiation to run the sensors. They are ultra low power though.

Wireless transmission of power is definitely possible, but running your AP on it isnt at this point in time.

I used to build tesla coils. Old TVs are a goldmine of parts for them.
I also know exactly how it feels to get a 30kV zap from them too...

Did you move from Dongara to Geraldton?

If I ever head up your way I'll stop by and we can launch some things into the ocean :)

Ohhh dude that made my day :) Yeah i am in gero now. Was a bitch of a move :S

For chrissy i got a reusable model rocket. Unfortunately the days that i have been available to launch has been windy as hell :(

I dont do many reusable rockets now, except of course the big ones.

You live in Gero! When is there ever no wind?
A two week crane job up there turns into a 6 month job every time. You would rock up at 6am, confirm its too windy, then wait for the wind to stop!

If you want the same effect, just tape the motor to the top of a .9m bamboo stake and point over the ocean.

You shouldnt really be launching these things in summer anyway...

Couldnt agree more about launching in summer mate. luckily i am very close to wide expansive open dunes with nothing to burn :) I did a static test burn in the back yard. They dont burn for long, and dont stay hot for long either which is a big plus.

Wireless Power Transmission Using Magnetic Resonance. it's efficiency is not too bad. Tesla got over 80% efficiency i think a long time ago. other companies have developed it on a smaller scale.

unlike a microwave, we deal with frequencies that do not interfere with any organic material (plants, fish, human & pets)

think of it as a magnet with a north and south poll. all the magnetic waves go from one pole to the other. if you block the magnetic waves then they just push around each other.same with the resonant coils. the energy can't go to other places other than things that resonate (match the frequency of the transmitter).

unfortunately the physics is complicated and thus the circuitry to make your own wireless power transmitter would be too complicated for most. also expensive to buy. you would be cheaper to:

buy solarcells, inverters & batteries
pay an electrician to run an outdoor power point to your setup
(me) 25m extension cord and some cable ties to keep it out of walkways. not a long term solution but under 20 bucks.

:P :)

I'm tempted to wirelessly borrow some ambient electricity via a coil under some big power lines nearby.

Does that count? :)

Actually you need a long wire running parallel to the transmission line, think "fence" :)

There was a case many years ago in Adelaide of guy who lived close (in the near field for those who know) of an ABC transmitter.. He made a resonant tank coil, must have taken up half his garage at that frequency and tapped it to run his house for a while. Only got found out when the technicians were re-tuning the output stage of the transmitter and got a huge dip.. yep, it was a 50kW dip meter. Techs knew what would cause it so it was just a matter of knocking on doors and talking to the power company until they found out who hadn't needed to pay a bill in a while.. :D

There are many different wireless power systems in use now, Texas Instruments is making the best system controllers at the moment from what I've seen. The transmitter and receiver need to be very close (ie touching) for it to work effectively. It's a mutual inductance thing. The efficiency is TERRIBLE.

The wireless sensors and such, and RFID tags are ultra-low power devices that require microamps or less to operate. It's more effective to capture energy from mechanical motion than to send it wirelessly right now.. there are some great new devices for in place sensors that use vibration to capture energy..

Now solar panels that were more than 20% efficient? That would be freaking brilliant. I've seen some work at my university on optical downconversion to try and reach that goal, so I've got some hope in that department.

Wireless power may happen some day, but not under the current laws of physics :D

Cheers KS

You'd need essentially an antenna at 50Hz, something that would resonate at the same frequency so you could couple energy out. Keep in mind that it would be LARGE. The wavelength at 50Hz is 6000000 meters. Yep, you read it right, 6 million. Or, 6000 km.

So you'd need a quarter wavelength of that, effectively. Or a resonant network that would take up your whole property..

Also, utilities monitor current flow in the lines for fault detection.. one thing you would do is make them all run around looking for what keeps setting off their fault alarms :D :D

Almost sounds worth the effort..
