Hey everyone,

First of all, if I posted these questions in the wrong section of the forum, I apologize! Please let me know where it ought to be!

I'm looking at starting a new system, based on this image, and of the aquaponic systems I saw in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I'm finishing up my last semester in college, so my system needs to be moved to wherever I end up this summer, in May.

This is a basis for the design: http://erieaquaponics.wordpress.com/201 ... rden-expo/

I realize that the design in the link is more of a prototype, but I would like to make one similar to this, and similar in size. I'm thinking one tank, as in the picture with two smaller GBs on top that would be more shallow.

Would this work? Do you have any suggestions for this? I want the system to be functional, but I am also looking for a crisp, clear design- I have roommates, and this will be in our recreation room so I am trying to keep it from looking too messy.

Thanks,

David

Also, do I need a filter as part of this system? Is that an absolute essential?

If you used hydroton (or river pebbles, etc.) to make the top a media bed instead of a raft you would probably be fine without a filter.

I think that realistically a system this size is going to do very little, so long as you understand this before hand and don't expect lots of produce from it. Those plants were grown elsewhere and the system has obviously been set up just as a quick demo unit.
