I noticed a couple of my barra had white stripes on their heads yesterday. Found the reason in a minute here. What a great resource this forum is. Thanks

Thanks to everyone.

We have been investigating a little further with this. Obvious physical signs are of great value, such as the white stripe on barra's, fin rot etc but how about a means of measuring electric emissions from the fish (not electric eels etc) when stressors are present.
It is documented that fish use electroreceptors to detect electrical fields produced by other fish and when a fish is stressed it emits a strong DC field potential which makes it more susceptible to predation.

That being so then we should be able to measure an electrical field in a fish tank when stress starts to occur and possibly before the fish are damaged through aggressiveness or deteriorating water quality.Bearing in mind that the emissions are very small in millivolts then producing such a measuring instrument might be difficult.
(Nothing is impossible for APers)

I put this up for people to have a think about.

WD and OH.
