Don't forget to ask for a discount if you buy multiple items. . . . I bought 4 in Brisbane last year marked at $100 and I got them for $80 each

Could it be that the DW pump doesn't have a sponge filter and therefore doesn't need as much power to move the same volume of water as a pump with a sponge filter?

the sponge filter is really coarse so i wouldnt have thought that would increase that much. Maybe 10-20%

Thanks for the response. I'll pay attention to whether its dirty water or not. I learned on the weekend that my local CRT sells IBCs for $150 (they held gypsum) so I might be able to do a chift pist afterall. Took a few things to cash converters, few more things on eBAY. If I didn't take such a heavy depreciation hit there'd be something nice about feeding a new hobby with the remains of previous hobbies.

I'd look further for IBC's - $150 is NOT cheap. Locally (Shepparton) we can get really clean, as-new, only had milk products in them, IBC's for $50ea. I'd be looking for under $100 before I started thinking it was a deal.

Also about to find out if a guy just south of there has 200L barrels for $20 still - was going to get 2 but having read Nat's Blue Barrel AP thread I might fill the trailer instead.

Maybe you're near a dairy farm or something?
Most IBCs I see on Gumtree etc are Sydney or (especially) Melbourne region.
The only ones I've seen for $50 are something like: "IBC with only minor amount of liner left, previously used for dissolving bodies, pickup only from Simpson Desert".

Forget barrels. If you can get IBCs for $50 why wouldn't you? 200L for $20 or 5 times that capacity for little more than twice as much $?

I think the guy selling the IBC's is getting them from the large milk company nearby. I've already got 4 x IBC's from the guy so for now I have enough for my GH system - might get one or two more for water storage though...

I want barrels for filters for my IBC system. Then I read Nat's thread and thought more barrels might make boutique AP systems - we have a rotunda on our back veranda so I could put one of them there with (say) yabbies in it to provide specialty crops or perhaps fragrant ones such as mint or basils.

I could even set up a salt barrel AP for some of the shellfish I like (mussels, scallops) or prawns perhaps along with salt tolerant plants - those barrel systems Nat has look perfect for trialling things without killing space.
