Yeah, think one of my silvers has started to develop some spot after all the rain entering the system. Right after I just brought salt back to normal levels.

Have chuck 5 or 6 handfuls of salt in the tank

Your assumption would be incorrect Charlie....

I've never seen anything like that. Is it a pipe fitting?
I'm building two 4'x4' wicking beds. What do type of soil do you suggest filling them with?

They're a cut down of a slimline rainwater tank Bob... something like this...

Flawed tanks are recycled...usually cut up, ground down and added back to virgin pellets....

In my case... there's bread trays on the bottom, covered with shadecloth.. to form the wicking reservoir... then sand and coir as a wicking medium... then layers of cane mulch and soil....

Are you human?: Not on Mondays
Location: Kurrajong NSW Australia
Kurrajong 70km NW of Sydney. I really really should be in bed now but alas I'm still on the forum.

I run the local primary schools veg patch and we apparently have funding. I'd love to stick in a small system but I need to set up my own 1st.

Its nearly 3am here and I am shocked at how bad reality tv is. Its even worse than the stuff on during the day and that's a statement. If only I had my trout here right now I could stick my head in the tank and put myself out of my misery. Is this what human nature has become? Honestly I'm embarrassed to be a person sometime.

A bit off topic but I didn't see a subject called "reality tv baggers".

Anyhoo will send pics n progress of my system when I can.

Are you human?: I work at it
Location: Central NSW Australia
Hello everyone

I have been researching to construct an aquaponics system in my backyard and now confident enough to put my toe in the water (so to speak).

However, my wife would like to see an installation up and running before we start!

I live Central NSW and wondering if there may be a generous soul within a day's drive that wouldn't mind hosting us for a squiz at your pride and joy?

If you are sort of Nyngan, Dubbo, Mudgee, Orange, Bathurst, (even Blue Mountains), Cowra, Cootamundra, Wagga etc I would love to hear from you. Would you leave me a note please.

Thank you in anticipation.

Kind regards
Rodney Gwyn

Just starting to gather the basics, and trying to excite the BRIDE :notworthy:

If I can convince her that the greens will be worth it, then "Pride of position" will be my reward, otherwise it's a case of "You not put that there" :upset:

I know that this is rather OLD by now, but I seriously doubt that "SOLAR" was not worth the effort..

If you have a Battery, and you have a means of powering from the battery, then you should be able to use PV Panels to charge the battery and run the system, completely..

Hi Chrissy not sure if this would be an option for you or not but... When I was raising easter lillies in Florida (yep I'm a yank). I needed to put up shadecloth so the sun wouldn't burn them.
It was a black plastic weave 4 foot wide you could overlap it a few inches and button it together with nails used like pins in fabric.

Making a frame for it was pretty easy some of the ferneries used it attached to cables to cover very large areas of their shade loving ferns. I think you can get it in various weaves to make it shadier if needed.

This would serve to make things a bit cooler and even cut down on the wind some if you also had side panels. Again not sure if this is an option for you but if it helps that's great.

I'm in Armidale, NSW, and wanting to explore the possibilities of fish'n'food. If anyone in the area has a working setup, please let me know. I'd love to see a system in action that is a backyard setup.

I have a 5m x 3m cat room at the back of the house that I'm planning on converting to a hothouse, and an aquaculture setup sounds ideal for it. Looks like it would have to be trout in the long term given the winter temperatures here, and I'll probably start with goldfish until I know what I'm doing.

It'll take me ages to get anything started (renovations) but I'm hoping that I can at least start experimenting this summer. Hopefully without losing too many fish!
