wow mate, thats what Ive based my calculations on????? Well, what do you suggest that a reasonable ratio is???

It should be based on your filtration capacity..... for sake of argument... your grow bed volume....

So 2 x 300L grow beds.... gives you a filtration capacity of 600L....

Max 1 fish per 20L.... new system better to go 1 fish per 25L....

So 30 max.... 25 better....

If you've already ordered 50 fish.. they'll be small... so you've got time to add another two grow beds....

I have 800+ lts of growbed and did 25 trout for my first batch in an immature system. None died from toxicity (some jumped out), but there were a couple of times when I had to leave feedi g for a day or two because I reached 1-2 ppm on the ammonia.

Best to follow Rupe's advice, he's being doing this for a long time.

I have upped my fish number this time to 30, next time I'll probably go to 40, but that will be the max. Even though technically I could push it higher.

Thanks mates, I did plan to add more grow beds Rupe, I will start on that project sooner rather than later. I bow to your experience.

I've previously posted a question but not gone any further than that. I live in the Bungendore region just outside Canberra. The wind is a bit stronger and the temp a bit cooler where I am, so it might be a long while before I've figured out what I want to do.
If I can free up some money before it starts getting colder I might have a system in a month or 4.

Make it a month or three... and go for trout around end of April... there's a couple of others down that way that will be...

Yeh, its been on my calendar ever since I found the capitalaquaponics site. I don't think it can happen in time. Hoping I sell my old car, that might free up some funds.

So how did other NSW BYAP members go with trout over the summer? We kept hitting 39 & 40 where I am. My parents are up just outside Coonabarabran and seem to have had nothing but 35+ since early Jan.

They don't. My last one stayed alive until around 28-29 degrees water temp, but during those 45degree days last week the water must have reach 30+, and he did not make it.

I feel like a bit of a slack bugger letting him get to that stage. But at least I know their real limits in my system.

Geez, how much water did NSW get last night? Something like 50mm out where I am. I stuck the 220L barrel under my tank overflow halfway through and it was full in minutes or hours.
Normally I love water, but the stuff was coming out the overflow and the inflow, and just generally flooding the area around the house.

Must have been a bit of rain last night.... it filled my wicking bed to surface level...

Currently, while I can drain it... there's no overflow hole....

Im assuming the clothes line is no longer in use Roz..
