Well I figured it was time to introduce myself after looking over a lot of information and posting a question or two. I live in Northern WV and last year we raised out 50 Rainbow Trout between Jan and the end of May when my spring wasn't running fast enough. This year we are trying 100 Rainbows and plan on adding some growbeds early spring to help maintain water quality. Here are a few pictures as is:

Fish tank as is. It holds approximately 500 gallons and was previously a cattle trough before I bought the place.

I previously had a different lid but a bear decided the lid wasn't strong enough but he didn't get any fish so we have a new lid (upside down satellite dish)

Here is the solar panels (2x 170w) and the cistern for the spring catchment (1000g) and also holds the batteries and a pump for irrigation.

Next up the actual spring damn and catchment.

Amount of water coming out of the SLO which currently runs down over the hill

Overflow of the cistern.

Thats about what I have so far. I am going to be picking up 4 ICB's this weekend and need to figure out exactly how to add the grow beds and a sump. It should be interesting and ill post some updates and some questions i'm sure.

More information:

The spring cistern flows underground into the old concrete trough. Stand pipe in on opposite side and exits through bottom. The spring slows significantly during the warmer months and I will need to get a filtration system in place as soon as possible that is for sure. I think I may go fish tank > radial flow filter > grow beds > sump > fish tank with an ebb and flow siphon setup.

Welcome Mallow,

Looks like you've got some work ahead but your site looks promising. Depending on the location of the growbeds the trees might cause some problems and it looks like you could have some leaf cleanup in the Fall otherwise having a spring for your source water is great. Are you trying to do this as continuously spring fed or just topping off with spring water?

Lots and lots of work to do. The sun during March through October shouldn't be an issue for getting full sun where the grow beds are going. Outside of that range I am hoping the spring water will be enough to keep the trout happy and so far they have done great. The leaves are always a mess down there but the spring is a sealed system so they wont get in to clog them up but ill have to cover the grow beds during fall/winter. The plan is to have the spring continuously run into the system and move the overflow to the sump tank. The spring slows to only a gallon or two per minute during the summer so mainly looking for something to tide me over till it starts flowing again in the fall.

So I sort of copied this design with parts I could find:

http://www.aquacenterinc.com/Downloadab ... ctions.pdf

The main hopper is a 4" pipe with reduced to a 2" pipe. There is a threaded rod going down through the middle of it all with a plate to adjust how much food comes out and then there is a ball on the end of the stainless threaded rod. I just installed it and going to see how it works. The hatchery where I got my fish from had them in all the raceways so I figured why not try it for like $30 in parts. If things work out I will take some pictures and post to show how I made mine.

I picked up a few IBC totes over the weekend:

It was 1 degree F this morning so I think it will be a bit before cleaning them up and slicing them into grow beds.

You have to put up with bears? If only life were so simple for us here in Australia. We have..... have.... spiders (long legged varieties), catapillers (they do get realy big), frogs and cabbage white butterflys.

Mallow Vs Bear. This could be an interesting thread.

Good luck Mallow.

I wouldn't be too sure Australia lacks... um... wildlife charms. :D Something I wrote on another site when some Yanks were talking about raiding Australia for our fuel...
Quote:
As an Aussie I'd like, in a friendly manner, to offer a cautionary word or two...

1. Insects & arachnids - we have a few here to give pause to the bravest souls. Couple of spiders that specialise in large mammalian types, another as big as a plate that likes meat. Got a couple of flies about an inch long that bite like the devil's pitchfork.

2. Snakes - of the top 13 most poisonous snakes on the planet, we have 12 of them. The King Cobra is about No. 8 I think. The top five are a whole order of magnitude above all others, in toxicity & amount delivered. Tiger snakes like to come hunting if you so much as walk too close. Most of them like to swim.
We have a snake that like to climb trees & hang around till someone walks near the tree. They can flatten their bodies & glide so from 100ft tree you aren't safe out to about 60ft away.

3. We have lizards that like to eat snakes...

4. Those kookaburras that you hear in jungle sound tracks in movies? The laughing jackass as we call them? They like to pick up poisonous snakes & fly up in the air & drop them. This tends not to please the snakes. Try not to be under one.

5. Kangaroos - about 4ft tall (the greys) up to about 7ft tall (the reds), claws an inch or more long, head of bone, hind legs able to rip the belly from a rhino. Get a little short tempered when anything gets between them & food. Try not to...

6. Wombats - short cute little sorts, build from molybdenum steel. If one starts running, DON'T let it hit you. You'll lose the bit it hits. Sherman tanks were designed after them but they couldn't quite get the solidity factor with mere metal.

7. Koalas - We keep them stoned on eucalyptus because they have muscles of steel to drive 2 inch claws. Australia would be uninhabitable if they ever get straight.

8. Emus - About the size of an Ostrich but meaner. Like to kick & capable of giving you new front ribs - sticking out your back

9. Cassowary's - Emus are afraid of them, think they're too stroppy.

10. You don't need to worry about sharks in the estuary waters. The crocs ate them out...

When & if you get past all of that, you'll probably reconsider the whole 'raid' idea & figure anything requiring that kind of committment should probably result in you becoming an Aussie.

That's OK, we've got a few nationalities here - 130+ at last count. We accept almost anyone. *grins* ...that survives...

...and let's not talk about Bunyips and Drop Bears

That is pretty close to what I came up with. Yesterday they either figured out how to bump it for food or alot of food came out. I will check this morning to see if they have more out again.

The bear has been a pain since I moved out here. He has destroyed my deer feeder countless times and now with the trout. He has a tracking collar on him so he is a nuisance bear and moved here. I never see him during hunting season so currently I have to put up with him for now....

I checked the water temperature this morning in the tank, 48 Degrees F while outside air temp was 3 Degrees and whatever with the wind chill it was very cold. I am glad it is staying as warm as it is inside the tank.
