I'm in the procces of planning how to convert an old hydroponic system to aquaponics (Tilapia and leaf vegatables), it's located 20 min by boat from town at an Orphanage and school on the edge of the rain forrest on the Rio dulce in Guatemala. There is no electricity there now and bringing it in is not cost effective. The total water volume is aprox. 10k gallons with three 1200 gallon tanks and forty 16'x1.5'x1' concrete raceways. We're planning on removing the gravel and using a raft system to get as much water volume a possible. We would like to use air lifts as much as possible but know water pumps will be need. any suggestions are welcome

Have you considered solar power? If you don't have electricity then you're going to have to find some form of power source.

How did the hydro setup work without power, presumably it had some pumps?
