Hey Charlie,

I did ask some question a while ago about Aquaponics, was that you answered my question earlier?

Sorry I could not remember, yes it is a bit late to start, it had been delayed for babies. I have got an ibc Aquaponics connected with my existing pond, all finished, now just waiting to see the plants grow.

thanks Colin, that's very useful source for fish.

As they requested to buy minimum of 50 fish, if i am putting 50 into ibc tank, is this too much?

Too many in an IBC in my opinion. Maybe someone can share the order?

"IBC of aquaponics" manual will give your right advice on how many fish to stock.

I have had "NO" issues stocking 50 rainbows in and IBC system (1 X IBC FT + 1200 litres GB) in a new system then 80 second year - none at all.......

IT's a question of resilience - 50 will work if you filter effectively. I've been running an IBC system for 6 months or so and the GB now has a lot of organic material and the water in the tank, although clear, is a light brown.

I'm moving things into a new system inside a greenhouse and when I do I'll be adding a solids filter and a biofilter before the GB's - I think I should be able to do the biofilter in the sump using kaldnes or bioballs as a moving bed filter.

I've just responded to another thread by Jamesvs400 who is wanting someone to share a buy from Glenwaters so maybe the 3 of us can partake?

Yes....filtration is the key. Obviously if you have the filtration for 50 then go with 50 (though, maybe not in a new system), but you will eventually start to push the limits of space in a FT even if you have infinite filtration.

a good system can stock 30kg per 1000 litres, that's the "standard" safe amount, imo for a +12 month old system, stocking lighter first year (20 - 30 if new to AP)

60 fish - namely rainbows dont weigh close to 500 grams each until almost the end of the average cycle (unless you can keep water below 25ish) and if they did, that's the "safe working mass" of the fish or you want fish for the biggest brag contest ;) . I pull mine out at varying stages as they grow at different rates. I had a very good supply and for me, i have and have had no issues with 80 rainbows in a mature (12 month old) system with at least 1:1 ratio and a well built SLO + no overfeeding + keep an eye on water chemistry.

I dropped 50 into a brand new system, 80 into a mature and i would have no issues doing it again :)

My $0:10c worth anyways :)
