Excellent Chad , sorry to be so blunt but it was important to you and yours , on my second system i too have used the cages for much the same thing they are really handy ..

I was lucky enough to get shuttles that had organic fish based compost juice in them , to others that read this dont be in a hurry something will turn up , interestingly people will take these suspect shuttles but ask the same people to brew beer in a 20L sprayseed drum and of course they will tell you to take a leap .

Couple of thoughts , pick your site taking into consideration your climate extremes be it wind or sun , cold ect . you may need a shade / polyhouse , noise for your nieghbours can be an issue .

Will you use auto siphons , timed flood or constant flood ?

A 3000Lph pump will supply that at zero head (pumping height) as you push water up with these pumps you will quickly lose flow , so keep your levels to a minimum , any bends or restrictions in your supply line will also affect flow .

Welcome to the Addiction
Cheers Rob

Hey Terra,

Im going to use the CHIFT PIST / CHOP 1 system, bell siphons in the grow beds, but after reading a lot of stuff on this forum, considering making one of the grow beds constant flow for some of the veggies that seem to love it that way.

Im pretty lucky with my yard, wont have to worry about noise. Shade will be no doubt needed given the heat of perth summers.

We really need a way to distinguish between WA for Washington and WA for Western Australia. I keep looking for other people in my area doing aquaponics, and always end up finding folks in the other hemisphere instead. :)

Oh, well. Guess it just means I should save my pennies for a trip to the other WA some day, to meet all my aquaponics friends, huh?

Anyway, welcome to the addiction, from another newbie in the other WA!

Winter in July just seems so strange to my northern hemisphere brain...
Do you have a summer meet up? Escaping from winter to summer for a few days seems 'way more appealing than the other way 'round! Or maybe I'm just tired of being cold, at the moment. ;)

they're only 20cm deep though. some would say that's not enough.

They'll work just fine..... some plants, like tomatoes... with rapidly spreading roots can result in them getting root bound...

But shallow rooting stuff.... like lettuce, herbs, greens etc.... will work OK...
