File comment: This shows all the hardware over the fish tank.. the pump now feed water higher than it used to so the increased head has decreased flow somewhat but being a 6500 l/h pump its still enough at the moment. I am planning to run 2 pumps simultaneously in the future ( either 2 4000 or 5000 pumps). This will mean I have a backup running if one fails due to mechanical reasons as this would not activate my backup pump which only activates when there is a power failure. Although I think I would have to install non return valves on each pump hose/pipe. Does anyone know if non return valves decrease flow a lot or clog up????

File comment: This is where the 100mm pipe feeds back into 40mm pipe and returns the water to the sump with the pump. I have used barrel unions everywhere so I can if needed pull everything appart to repair or clean out individual components.

File comment: prototype strawberry tower.. I have added screws because I didnt trust the PVC glue or silicone to hold over time.. you can see at the bottom there is an inspection hole which I dont plant in which is a quick way to check waterflow too. Also at the top I have the stainless steel drain mesh that works well to filter solids... not that I have any really as I have no fish yet... SEQ fish dont deliver to Russel Island unfortunately so jades will have to wait until after New Years..

Around this time of year I don't have much else to do, so I get to spend it on my hobbies

Ok, question time :dontknow:

Non Return Valves

I am planning to use 2 pumps at the same time (as well as keeping my 12v backup pump for power outages) in case one of them breaks down the other will continue to pump until I can replace it (the backup only turns on when theres power failure not pump failure)
However i have realised that if I incorporate 2 pumps and one fails and the other keeps going then the water will possibly mostly just return the water via the broken pump, so I could use non return valves.
So has anyone got experience with these valves, I looked at them at bunnings in the pressure PVC pipe section and inside is a spring operated type valve that closes off when there is no flow/pressure.
Does anyone know if these valves would cause a lot of reduction in flow? and they must be a possible failure point for clogging (or so I imagine).. Anyone have experience with trying this?
Also the pumps would be feeding into a 40mm pipe via 25mm pipe so the valve would be for the 25mm pipe.
Thanks in advance :thumbright:

Just found a post by Razor, who was trying to do something similar and talked about using a header tank instead if non return valves... this seem less risky, any thoughts?

Interesting question. I poked around on Google and found a site that sells all kinds of PVC pipe and fittings. On that site, do a search for VALVE. About halfway down the page it shows a Clear (or Economy) Swing Check Valve. Looking further into those, it looks like they use a stainless steel spring. Simple enough construction. Doesn't look like it would restrict the flow too much, but any check valve you use will have some restriction regardless.
Not sure on the shipping from the US to AU, if it would be worth it to you.

Thanks for that :thumbright: definitely a possibility.. perhaps I can find it from an Australian supplier.. I would only need 3. I also like that it is clear, which would make it easy to check that it is working and not getting clogged! :headbang:
