There I was minding my own business, trimming up some plants and picking some greens for the chickens, when I hear "flip, flop, flap" fish jumped from the tank. Oh no, aaah. I ran to assist, and without a care for my own safety, tried to firmly hold the large silver perch while cradling it and gently returning it to the safety of its school. I thought for one evil minute of how it would go on the barbecue, but wrestled with my conscience before returning it to the cool, calm waters. But before I could swim it with the currents it flapped one more time piercing the soft skin of my paml. There was blood everywhere, and the sting of being speared by a fish became evident. As I type this one handed, nursing the scars of this terrible experience I pause momentarily to spare a thought for the fish and nod to him, knowing that his turn will come one day and in return, I will spear him. :upset:

Should have stuck with your gut feeling and dispatched him instead of returning to the tank. Better to eat with two hands than type with one.

Hehehe, mess with me and see what happens
Yep, I sure am Werdna, but I went and sent a clear message to the rest of them, I can tell you.

Actually, if the truth be known after dressing my wounds I went to check on the fish. I found one that had battered herself almost to death, lol I said, you are dinner. I bathed her wounds and dressed her nicely before taking photos. If you are fainthearted, look away now. It is going to get gruesome and awesome all at the same time.

I was pretty pleased with the weight of the fish at 1382 grams (almost 1.4kg) which is over 3lbs to all you guys and gals using imperial calcs :)

The fish seemed to swell the longer is was on the cutting board being photographed. Joel was a little concerned, might be more for Nat and I if we don't have to share.

It did not appear as fatty as what I had been led to believe from others, easy to fillet, though there did not seem to be any flesh over the rib cage. A couple of lovely fillets to be had this evening as it is Friday here and looks like we may be partaking in a little fish and salad. After removing the fillets I ventured to open up the guts and was quite surprised at what we found.

Fish eggs I wondered. They continued to expand, and I reckon if I hadn't split them open I could have removed a sausage like thingy which weighed 236g. Isn't that simply amazing.

Next question is how do you guys all prepapre your fish eggs - ala caviar.
My dad cooked them up in a frypan once like around 40 years ago, any other ides. And did I say "How exciting" you learn something new everyday.

Wonder what would have happened to the eggs if the fish had lived on ?

would they have been spawned or just been re-absorbed? I know from catching snapper their flesh is cacca after they have spawned.

If there had been a male around could he have provided some milt to make babySPs?

Used to get deep fried cods roe in pommy land from the chip shop. don't think i'd be eating it like caviar!

PS whats the blue stuff?

I think that would be about right Mantis.
I just fried up the roe on the UCD and find it quite acceptable with a soy, ginger dipping sauce.
Followed by silver perch nuggets with the Friday night drinks, how healthy is that?

Awesome harvest Faye! Tells you that's you're doing something right when your fish are trying reproduce :)

I ate Tilapia Roe growing up from time to time... Fried up I swear it tastes like chicken eggs... Little ketchup and it wasn't bad... I'd rather just eat the fish though :p
