I just put the bass in the other day, have not had any deaths since I put the bass in. Of course there is only 1 tilapia left in that tank.

This is also a possibility. If minnows weren't added to this tank until long after you were losing fish then it's not as likely to be the issue.

I didn't mean to suggest getting your IBC contaminated. I was thinking a smaller quarantine tank not connected to the system or maybe a 30 to 50 gallon plastic garbage can (for just a few fish and preferably unused). You'd have to watch the temperature fluctuations, do partial water changes and aerate but getting the temp higher wouldn't be difficult. You could disinfect the barrel, the big tank, and the standing water also.

I've had small catfish in 30 gallon plastic trash containers. I've lost the occasional one but many more have come back from near death with the warmer water (were talking barely moving and unable to orient themselves so pretty far gone). I'm convinced more of these would have died if I left them in the other tank based on the ones I didn't move.

Thanks, it is going to be a week before I get home to try anything else.

Green house is doing great, had a good cold front last night and outside air temp was 37F/2C and inside the green house never got below 53F/11C with no supplemental heat. Tonight is supposed to get down to 26F/-3C so we are going to use a gas burner to heat about 40 gallons of water in a pot and hope that radiates plenty of heat inside the green house.

Hmmm, I think you could use a Rocket Mass Heater. Yep, even in Texas.

I have almost 3k gallons of water that is about 70F in the greenhouse. Also with about 40 gallons of water at near 200F I think it should stay nice inside.

Helomech, were you feeding the tilapia the minnows as well? that could be your reason. The bass insides are made to digest smaller fish and fight off many of the parasites that the smaller pray might have had. The tilapia on the other hand, have extremely long intestines bc in the wild they are grazers. What happens is it takes the Tilapia so much longer to digest its food for due to the long intestines, it gives bacteria a chance to grow on the minnow meat sitting idea in there stomach. In the aquarium hobby this is often referred to as "Bloat". Once one of the fish have it when that fish dies, the bloat parasites then attack the rest of the tank. I have lost aquariums full of fish in less than a 24 hours. They are omnivores and will always appreciate a treat but instead of minnows maybe trying brine shrimp, blood worms, snails or black soldier fly. Some fish are much more prone to bloat than others. In my experiences it almost always occurs when you change up there staple food for something with much much more protein or feeding live food. This may not be your issue what so ever, just trying to keep the ideas coming and it was my first thought when I read the bass were fine and the 1 tilapia is still alive, he doesn't have a chance at a minnow with a bunch assassins in the tank with em.

Good luck!

No, the tilapia are all fed the same floating fish food, and some duckweed. Never put any minnows in before. Oh and the last tilapia died yesterday. So i just have bass in that tank now. Not going to put tilapia in there again till summer.

But thanks for the info.

We have 24 3-4 inch tilapia in the one 55 gallon tank, 2 females one with the fry and the other with eggs in the 10 gallon, and nothing in the new 55 gallon tank yet. Need to buy a heater for it.

Not sure how close you are located to a petsmart, but the ones in fort worth have been running a great sale on Fluval heaters. They were like $10 off the 150/200/300 watt heater, picked up a few of them. I don't spend to much on the heaters because in my experiences even the best heaters either break or loose there accuracy to the point where you have no control over when it actually kicks on.

Cool thanks. Nearest pet smart ( or any name brand pet store) is about 1.5 away. I do go near one for work and will have to swing in next time I am near there.
