Another successful trout harvest....

It's so good to see people harvesting their fish this year... rather than trying to push the envelope with temperatures...

So we now have 16 trout in the freezer for use over summer. Kept two out for dinner tonight. Fish & chips!

Overall I am very pleased with my first attempt at growing fish at home. I picked up 25 fingerlings back in May and harvested the last one today. The average weight of this years trout when havested was 316 g and I estimate they where somewhere between 50-100g when I got them. So thats not a bad result in exactly 5 months.

Next step is to give the growbed a tidy up, put in some summer crops and get some new fish. Also am planning on adding a second growbed to the system. I think I'm going to get silvers next. This will motivate me to get another system up and running before next trout season!

Cheers Rupert. Yep best place for them is in the freezer. I will miss freeding those ravenous little fish each morning though

This was a few weeks ago but I cleaned out the growbed as the peas had taken over! Found a few other things somehow surviving below the mass of peas. Been slowly harvesting peas over a few months and now have some in the freezer.

Since I harvested the trout I have had 3 comets in the system to eat the mozzie larvae. Ironically we have had fairly mild weather since I havested the trout so could have kept them right up until now. Oh well live and learn. Yesterday went for a drive down to Ferguson Valley to pick up 40 silver perch from Troutman They are slowly settling into their new tank and still fairly skittish. Have not been feeding yet but the water is still quite cool at around 17 degrees C. Next trip to Perth in a few weeks I will be picking up another BYAP growbed as I am now overstocked.

I have a couple of these little guys living in my growbed and fish tank. Might be gonna set up camp

Got home today after a week away and had my first harvest of bsf
Splashed out about a month ago and bought a biopod. Before today it had only produced blow fly larvae. The chooks thought Christmas had come early

By the way what do you mean by the term "multipurpose" for Chooks.

I keep a few for laying eggs myself.

Usually muli/dual purpose means breeds that are good at laying but also good size for eating.
ie. not breeds like Leghorns that are laying machines but don't have much meat on them.
