I don't need a smart phone (or a dumb phone for that matter) or a wide screen TV.

I DO need food.

Arable land and fresh water is major asset. Both are becoming more scarce all around the world.

There already are ways to fix this problem BUT it's not profiable atleast not now anyway. Tax payers would probably not fund such ventures because the rewards are too far down the track.

i call for the opposite , Australia the lucky country has been good to my family of Italian immigrants , however it is becoming a country of elite snobs ....who has been responsible for the real growth of Australia in the last 60 years ? immigrants ...immigrants who came here on a dream of a better life , they worked hard and hence were rewarded. The system they came here under was controlled and effective , to the north of Australia and the centre of Australia lies a massive region of un populated land , yes yes most of it is desert ....so what , Arizona , Israel were also desert , water was directed to these areas and bingo ..thriving communties developed ... I say invite immigrants in to populate the country , if u do not invite them under our rules of assimilation then one day they will arrive in the millions unannounced and that will be when the food starts to runout . This country can have a population of 100 million plus and still leave room for more ... the ignorant elite who think they can keep the country for only the elite are dreamers ...time for a new generation of Politicians who can make this happen ...

I do agree with most of what you say CDM. You often hear people complain about how rich that typically Italian family is and how they were given the land which they are now selling for millions. The land could have been given to any one and worked but it was the Italians who did it and hey are the ones getting the reward.

The only part I don't fully agree with is allowing people to come here and assimilate. I don't think they are integrating in but that is off topic.

yes and i laugh at the debates on boat people and the wasted money on trying to figure out what to do ...its a diversion ... on my farm in the east kimberley we could listen to indonesian fishing boats on the radio at night ..... what will we do when 1 million immigrants arrive on our northern shores overnight ? Indonesia has already runout of land ....200 million plus people ...can u blame them for wanting to head south to a vastly un populated continent?

Many here will agree that growth is not sustainable. It's a difficult problem to fix for many intertwined reasons. For example in Australia we have superannuation and super is directly linked to the stock market which is driven by companies that need to keep increasing profit and try to improve on the last quarters profit. This means that while we would like a more sustainable society we find ourselves in a situation with confilcting interests where economic growth is paramount in order to keep the system running. How can people not back a system when it is vital for survivable and a certain way of life? We are in a way locked in unless people get really radical or maybe start making small changes. But what exactly are those changes and what does it entail?

I know so many of my posts include links to videos so they probably get skipped over but if you have the time and you are interested this is an interesting talk that I am currently watching:

I think one of the keys to assimilation is using the power of the media. Assimilation is a very tricky issue but I think the media holds much power in this regard. Whether it be TV, news papers or magazines - an ideal is presented to the population and this is emmulated in society. It especially has a strong effect on young children.

Young people of a different background do not feel represented and do not see examples of assimilation on TV very often. This may lead to them feeling as though they do not fit in to society and thus hinders assimilation further.

When I say media I don't just mean the news, I also mean fictitious shows.

It's easier said than done of course.

Toby is cool, spoken to him a couple of times and he's a really nice bloke...

Although I agree with a lot of what CDM says, it's not just as simple as "throw people in the desert and pump water there." There's arable land, then there's marginal land, and then there's areas you just can't and/or shouldn't do much on. And every time you take water from one place and send it elsewhere, there can be environmental issues that we don't necessarily think of or see at the time.

But in saying that, rural populations are in decline and crying out for people. But these aren't new areas, they were full of people a while back it's just that everyone has migrated to the cities.

I often despair at the redneck closed minded attitudes of many Australians. People need to realize we are all together floating on this little blue ball in the middle of nothing..

I thought twice about posting this link, but The Herd say it better than I can.. BIG WARNING LANGUAGE ALERT, DON'T WATCH THIS IF YOU DON'T LIKE SWEARING...

Can't say I didn't warn you.. But for those who don't mind bad language, turn it up
