I got a marine battery last year from in-laws for Xmas, for my battery air backup, that was a nice gift. This year I want a table saw, which doesn't sound very AP but I'd use it to make AP stuff.

whats the difference in models on the sunbeam food savers?

I notice they have a 440, 660 and 780 model. Is it possible to run them NOT in 'one touch mode', i.e. pull vacuum but not initiate the sealer bit and/or initiate the sealer bit without the vacuum (eg to seal a chip packet)

Also - has anyone used the non leading brands ones that sell for half the price?

Smoker's a good one, though got one of those.....yum just thinking of the spanish mackeral I last smoked in it!!! if only those could be APed!

Yea I like having a refractometer, it comes in handy if you need to treat fish and control your salt levels.

Other idea's are digital scales and vacuum sealer

Can someone advise a good refractometer for me to buy? Need to start salting now. Also the target level level for SP would be nice to know :support:

1 PPT would be a good start, eg 1kg of pool salt for every 1000litres of water.

I like to have a little salt in my system

BYAP do refractometres im pretty sure, or look on Ebay for a 25% one.

Yea 1 or 2ppt. I keep mine at 3ppt but it does cause problems with some plants. Another cool thing about salting is if you purposly flood your GB's so the water level goes above the media and then let it drain back down again - when the water dries on the media it leaves a slightly salty powder on the media which keeps the slugs and snails away :thumbleft:

Aquaponics is the first step on a slippery slope towards permaculture.

There are some great books on permaculture, as well as books on grey water harvesting, water storage, rocket stoves, greenhouse construction, all manner of related topics and the best part is you can read the books inside in the airconditioning over Christmas. Anything else you will have to take outside into the heat to play around with.

All I'd like is a selection of reducers to connect hp to dwv to stormwater, and a few cartons of piss :drunken:

AND someone to post some decent music on the Awesome Music thread (and that's not ACCA DACCA mixed with Ghostbusters :naughty: ) :)

With the reducers - I found if you gently heat the slightly larger pipe until it becomes soft you can slide the narrower pipe into it - let it cool while keeping it straight then pull it apart and glue as normal.

Happy Christmas :wave1:

PS do this in a well ventilated area!!!

A home brew kit. It compliments aquaponics nicely.
Spent grain into compost bin >>worms multiply
Feed worms to fish
Simple really
