So I'm new to the game of aquaponics and have some goldfish in a ,yes, 25000 gal pool. not a typo I have a sand filter and a pump sufficient enough to make all the water from the pool through a sand filter in a little over six hours. I will post pictures at a later time when there is light out. but i just need some pointers. I'm in killeen tx so the water is good enough for some catfish. I've also done some research to know that I need alot of grow space but the filter and aerator should cover most of it anyway.

Wow I can't to see this project develop. I have a pool too and have thought about converting it to a natural filtration system using aquatic plants. Alas my better half has not supported this notion yet. Do you no longer swim in the pool?

Nice big pool - you better start building lots of grow beds. Lol- Instead of spending your money on pool chemicals you'll be spending money of AP stuff. :)

Then watch out - you might grow lots of organic veggies. So much that your friends might mistake you for a tree- hugger! :)

Yea from what I've heard its one gallon to a cubic foot or something like that. Good thing is i have plenty of room for have that ratio so I guess the sand filter and aerator will pick up the rest.

I'm guessing that once you get several media GBs installed you won't have a need for the sand filter. And to further speculate (based solely on what I've read and no personal experience)
I think in time your sand filter will eventually be a hinderance. It will serve only to restrict flow once the sand traps enough organic matter. And then you spend rime/energy backwashing when you could have had worms in the media doing the cleaning.

In any case, it is great that your spouse supports this effort.

It will be great to see photos of your GB area and a simple diagram of how you're thinking of laying out your system. Folks here can help you spot potential areas of concern so you can address them before they become issues.

Some of the other guys who run pools just by pass the sand filter during winter, and pump to the grow beds using a submersible pond pump. Apparently it is way less expensive than running the pool pump all winter.

Also, you gauge your grow bed volume on the number of fully grown fish you want to stock, rather than tank volume.

I think the recommended ratio on this site is about 3kg of adult fish per 100lt of growbed filtration.

Thanks guys ill get a diagram put in of the backyard and where I'm planning on putting the grow beds. I'm also gonna experiment on fruit trees as well just for fun. Thinkin of putting them in a 30 gallon trash container with the same concept as the grow beds but ill wait and see till I get fully started.

Hopefully the grow beds are sufficient. I will take the exact measurements tomorrow when the suns comes back up. I just hope it works out well and I can still swim in it.
