Just as soon as the kits get down into a slightly more justifiable price range! :)

The person who invented the 3d printer posted everything on instructables. He does not mind people building them for personal use.

I built a Prusa Mendel from scratch (mostly). I got a set of plastic parts from someone (can't remember the name) via the reprap IRC channel. Built a set or RAMPS electronics, and sourced all the other (metal) bits locally.

Thing's have evolved a bit since I built mine about 18 months ago, but it still goes like a rocket (although like my AP system, I have a few upgrades planned).

It probably ended up costing me about AUD 350 ish.

If there is enough interest from people here, let me know and I can hurry up and finish a post on my blog about the build.....

Cheers
Sam

Ron 3d printing has been around for a long time. It has just been out of the price range of most people.

Sam, sounds good mate. I might even be interested in commissioning the plastic parts if you are keen :)

I'm sure something can be arranged :-)

PM me if you want more info (just so we don't hijack the thread too much)

I love the concept of buying a bootstrap 3D printer to print the real printer you want.

My local Hackerspace group have one. I'm not sure if that's common, but it might be worth having a look at your local group.

I've been meaning to join for ever but never seem to find the time.

Welp. No greenhouse progress will be happening for the rest of this week. My coworker who likes to extend her vacations by having sudden illnesses and going on medical leave has struck again, and since I'm the only other one not on vacation right now, that means I get to work the whole week by myself instead of splitting it between us as we had arranged. :upset: Last time this happened (for the exact same reason) we had record-breaking patient volumes for the week, which culminated in me bringing my husband to the hospital with me to have an emergency appendectomy while I worked my sixth day in a row.

It can't get that bad this time, though. I know this, because my husband only had the one appendix. ;)

Also, management is highly displeased, and I have been assured this will not happen again. And that in return for my inconvenience, I get the whole week off next week.

So, yay! Now I just have to survive until next week.
