sorry Faye, hard to break habits, we used to go to grandads farm and shoot the buggers cos they got into the grain bins, hard to see them as anything other than a pest now.

Aah the spring weather is soo lovely outside here today. I snapped a few pics while attending the growbed maintenance and in between chatting with the lovely customers and familiar faces that frequest us. Hardly seems fair to call it work.

This rainbow chard was moved from the trial system a few months ago and is looking absolutely gorgeous at the present moment, soo healthy and colourful.

This bed is one in the family system and gets morning winter sun under the shadecloth, the foliage is lush and the veges are densely planted. This bed contains parsley, beetroot, oak leaf lettuce, red cabbage, silverbeet, red mizuna and spring onions.

The tree fern and palms in the Backyard system is going crazy with a flush of new foliage and looks more like a rain forest. This bed has had minimal maintenance over the four or so years that the system has been running.

This little system has been chugging away since the barramundi were harvested about May/June of this year. It just goes to show that everything won't just die because there are no fish in the system for a period of time. The plants do still continue to grow, albeit not as vigorously as if they were removing nutrients form a constantly fed system. Worms wil continue to break down old roots and provide some nutrient. The cherry tomatoes have hung on over winter and continued to produce fruit, which are as sweet as candy!

Mmm this little guy was trying to hide in the foliage and was a little camera shy. Not so, this beautiful cranefly which I managed to get a few shots of, just wish I had the macro lens handy.

I do love a good rainbow chard and so do our chookens, which are pumping out the eggs. Gold laced wyandottes in the lead, followed by Australorps and Rhode Island Reds behind them in the laying stakes, but leading in the meat race. Here is one of the legs which weighed 550g and made a lovely soup.

How did you go with the baby brushtail, Faye? He looks so frail in the photo.

I believe that he was doing really well and has been reintroduced to the wild.

On another note, I am sooo excited, Just saw a monitor disappearing behind the blue barels, he was up and walking on all 4 leags and meandered away when I excitedely pointed and oohed. Soo cool, never seen one here in Jandakot and was about 60 cm long, awesome, I think perhaps a gould monitor. Didn't have time to take a photo. Fingers crossed I'll have another opportunity.

By the way, we have also discover lots of eggs in the solar system along with a pair of frogs, could be more taddys on the way. Nat and Sue are down the back rescuing some as we speak. such an eco system here. Gotta love it :)

Todays lunch is eggs florentine ala trout, cooked on the Universale Cooking Device (UCD) aka common ol' sandwich toaster.

I reckon you could do better than that Charlie, what about a yabbie on the UCD. That'd be the Kal aternative to a shrimp on the barbie wouldn't it?
