Hello everyone! I am living in central southwestern Virginia and have been lurking for a while and got the aquaponics bug. I just scored the initial makings of my first bed and hope to keep the momentum going and get the plumbing working before it gets too cold. This is such an amazing forum, with a wealth of knowledge to draw on and a great community to be involved with!

Welcome! It might be better to build through the cold, that way by spring your system will be ready to plant out. Nice grow bed!

Thanks guys! I will be purchasing plumbing and a pump this week. The GB is about 8 feet long and 2 feet wide and about a foot deep. Any suggestions on a pump?

The stock tank is going to be the fish tank? You want to be able to cycle the fishtank volume once per hour. So size your pump to be able to do that factoring in head height, accumulation of biofilm, and any future expansion you know is going to happen, because it will happen.

Okay, the container on the right will be the FT, I believe to be a 100 gal. tank. I am really green with this, what do you mean by head height, and accumulation of biofilm?

Head height is how high you will pump the water. Some pumps are more affected by it than others. Biofilm is the beneficial coating that coats everything the water is in contact with. It is where the nitrification process happens. Even though you are not building with IBCs, I would recommend reading the IBCs of Aquaponics. It's link is on the top banner on this page.

Quick update. Have the table built, plumbing next and then gravel to wash. Ignore the power cord, I just failed to clean up before the photo.

What is holding the grow bed on the wood frame? There is going to be a LOT of weight in that grow bed. I don't see any supports along the bottom.

+1 for adding supports now. Far easier than when it is full and collapsing...

Thanks guys, right now, I have the bed supported by the lip of the bed on 2x4 strips underneath and screwed in for support. I was thinking of adding a 2x4 across the center underneath attached to the center legs to support the bed from the bottom. BTW those leaves are my winter leaf compost pile. I do need to add more now though!
