Well it depends what you treat as difficult/sensitive. Barra is great for summer as it can take high water temperate but both fishes are equally hardy with the right water conditions. Barra do not like people poking their heads over their tanks. When feeding barra you need to stand at a distance they cannot see you unless they were brought up in an aquarium. They will go off any food for at least a few hours if they are spooked. Sp are not so sensitive to people poking their heads over the tanks.

Ok, so no problems starting with barra for a first fish...
Is there a central place in the forum with all the temp ranges for various fish, im after SP, JP and Barra.

Barra - The optimum temperature for barramundi culture is 28°C, with acceptable growth rates between 26-30°C. Temperatures below this range will result in decreased metabolism and growth. Barramundi generally stop feeding at temperatures below 20°C.

SP - Temperature 22-28 o C (optimum for growth), but silver perch survive in 4-32 o C and in a lot of cases even more extremes. Silvers tolerate the extremes of water temperatures better than almost any other aquacultured fish in Australia

JP - The biggest issue with Jade Perch is temperature. Jades stop metabolizing food at water temperatures below 18C, and will start to show stress at 16C, and death at prolonged periods below 14C. During winter, it is important to keep water temperatures above 16C. Jades are susceptible to common diseases that affect most cultured fish, but bacterial and fungal problems are most prevalent in the cooler temperatures, and ectoparasites during the spring and autumn. Most of these health issues can be avoided if water quality is kept at a optimum level and water temperature is maintained above 22C.

Can barra survive during winter months in a perth ibc?

Probably not... without heating...

Hi Guys , what is optimum size to get the baby Barra ? as i am aware they will eat each other and should they already be weened onto pellets?i have tracked down a supplier here in Thailand and he recommends them to be about 75 to 100 mm before transporting ... any ideas gratefully accepted

Well as long as your water is above 20 degrees and you have time to grow them you should be fine. Having them already eating pellets might be an advantage. I would't think you would have to worry about cold weather where you are.

I am pretty sure that some people here have grown barramundi smaller than 75mm successfully, try a search looking for Matthews posts.

is anyone planning on trying barra in Brisbane this year. my system can probably only take 25-30, so i'd be happy to split an order of 50 with someone.

also, where the hell do I get barra fingerlings from?

I actually started both of my batches in a aquarium (6ft) and then tranferred to an insulated and heated IBC for over winter. Its only now that I have transferred to the large tank (5000Ltrs) whichhas solar heating, thats when the sun will stay out.

They wont grow out to much size over one summer. I have done them for the last 4 years but was thinking of trying something different like Murray Cod. I already have Jades and SPs.

Can the fish pass sickness to humans after consumed at any stage when a system is matured?

this might be unrelated but my friend got some infection from his saltwater tank that blew his hand up. he thought it was a spider bite but it just kept growing until he went to the hospital
