Hello ,

I have just stared out on the Aquaponic ´s road, and have loads to learn. Here is how I started my system (a big thank you for IBC of Aquponics) for getting me on track!

Here are some pic´s and adventures I had along the way.

I bought the IBC off the classifieds, food grade , contained palmolein oil , while I was paying the nice man they loaded the IBC on my van with a forklift , when I got home I found that there was still about 250L of solid palmolein (liquefies at about 25 deg C) in the bottom of the tank , and I could not move it off the van!

My first choice would have been the expanded clay balls, but they are very expensive and difficult to find here. So I settled with gravel from the local hardware yard.
It was really thirsty work cleaning, but the gravel cleaned up really well, now I have got some pretty grow medium! The GB is really heavy and I am glad I when with the large angle iron frame ( 90 X90 X 6mm)

Even after a good wash, when I started circulating, the water turned brown. Made a quick filer and circulated for 2 days , the water is now crystal clear.

Here are the my 2 test subjects , tilapia Mozambique , I was hoping to get some redbreast tilapia ( rendalli ) , they are more herbervorish and I think they would be better with algae control. But I could not find any and I was keen to get some fish in the tank!

Got the rest of the fish today, they went in OK , but are not eating .I put some rocks and Aquatic plants form the local dam in the tank , they are all hiding out there and seem to be a bit nervous , but no floaters so far.

Good morning,

I was wondering if it would be a good idea to fill the bottom of the FT with gravel?

No, not really. Uneaten food, fish waste etc can settle and contribute to poor water quality. Keep the tanks clear in my opinion.
