Hey Gazza, on my search last night I came across a photo of eggs like that, they are not lacewings sorry. Try here, I think this is where I saw it http://www.graphicscience.com.au/ I love Denis's images
I know this is not AP related, but I am getting desperate, losing sleep and cannot find any images similar, perhaps one of you guys can help. I found this buzzing thing and snapped some pics, went back the next day and found something similar, I was thinking native bee, but now I am thinking bee mimic. You know the kind that pretends to be a bee but may be a moth, there is such a thing as a bee moth and a humminbird one too, in some parts of the world. Any ideas anyone?

I could not believe the detail on the back of this, almost resembles a monkeys face, or dragonfly face for that matter, incase you'd ever noticed what their faces look like, I do.

I think you're on the right track Faye, it looks like a bee-mimicking fly of some sort. Can't tell you the species sorry.

If you want a quick way to distinguish bees from flies, bees generally have smaller eyes and have 4 wings. Flies generally have larger eyes, and are one of only two orders of insects with only 2 wings.

If only they would stay still, next time I might try for a video, cause they are not really shy which is how I got so close with the macro lens, just had to stop breathing and stay extra still.

I was just marvelling at the detail, especially in the last one!

I also like the second one... on final approach with the landing gear out!... :D

News just in from the Ag Dept
Quote:
I believe your fly is a March fly, most likely a Scaptia species. Scaptia is a group of March flies which is nectar feeding unlike most of the March flies which are blood feeders. Scaptia species covered with dense hair and mimic bees. When disturbed they will buzz like a bee to scare you away.

A nectar feeding fly, now who would have thought, unlike the blood sucking ones that bite. It is really quite amazing the wildlife that we have that we know so little about, and did not even have a clue about its existance.

I'm up to date now thanks ;)
Wikipedia shows both types too.

I really don't like March flies, I have no idea how many I have killed as a kid..
