I ask this question because I see posts I thought were lost, and others are missing now. I also see we are back to the old URL. I am hesitant to post anything as I have no idea if it will stick, or if it will get lost with the server migration.

Sort of.... I hope......... :geek:

Just over 24 hours ago we had a bit of a major catastrophe here. after setting up multiple sites including this forum, on the new server, a slight slip of the finger and the whole server was deleted.. Beyond repair, lost, all gone, no, there's no server there any more.

So we had to do a quick change and point things back to the old server while we worked on getting things back up and running.

This means that unfortunately posts made over the weekend are lost, I'm very sorry about that but we have had to revert to the old database.

Still it's only perhaps 3 days or so, we still have everything else, all previous images are being copied over again and will be up within the next day or so..

If you are having troubles logging in or staying logged in, please try and clear the cookies in your browser. This should fix things...

So far as anything further getting lost, I can't see it happening. John is going to be exceptionally careful when playing in the back end, :) and we are going to set daily backups..

This is now physically our new host, everything is moved to here, and we have backups of everything, the old host expires in 2 days so we won't be swapping anything back there any more.

All good my side - might just be that traffic is low at the moment but the forum response time is super fast for me - before when I clicked on a thread it would take a few moments to open - now it's just click BOOM! thread open! Hmmm wrong choice of works - there shall be no more BOOMING around here :-)

Thanks for the explanation. I wondered if I had done something wrong when a post I made disappeared.

Joel,

Now that you've sorted out the hosting issues, is it time for us to start making requests for things we'd like to see on the forum?

My first request would be to remove the constraint that the forum is in a 1021px space in the center of the screen. If users want to have lots of "white-space" on either side of their screen, let them make those adjustments themselves, otherwise I always recommend using all of the available screen width; users purchase larger monitors to have more information available to them in a single screen, but this fails when web-designers force their pages into narrow strips.

I'd recommend deleting line 1158 of stylesheet.css which imposes the width: 1021px limitation, please :)

That would create issues with the top menu and banner. If you check almost any website they are almost all constrained to about 1000px, it's a bit of an industry standard.

Yes, and it's really annoying... I have twin 24" wide-screen monitors only to have most of the screen real-estate taken up by white-space!

The 'standard' happens mainly because many developers want to have pretty pictures in the header portions of their website, and are too lazy to left-float or right-float the image and then select a suitable colour for the background of that div element, so when the page loads and fits to the size of the window, the image appears to be at one with the element without rescaling or stretching the image.

[edit]
Also, by not defining the width, you are allowing senior members and vision impaired users to read their screens without horizontal scrolling. What do you think of the forum if your screen resolution is 800x600? It's very bad practice to alienate users because they don't want to see or cannot see the website in the same way as the developer. What is important here, the layout, or the information?

I too have twin 24 inch monitors... :) I don't think it's quite so simple... Internal layouts of websites are almost impossible when you have autofit websites. They may work for the simple forum style of things, but the majority of websites where you have to layout content within pages, no..

Also, reading shorter lines of text is far better/easier than big loooooooooooong lines of text.. I'm just going through the discussion here with John, he studied computer science specializing in web development, and he's listing lots of reasons almost every website is set at around 1000px, but he didn't mention laziness as one of them..

As a web developer, I too like liquid layouts where the content stretches to fit the available space.

However for a multitude of reasons it's almost always better to limit the width of the page to around 1000px.

In a couple of years when browser manufacturers realise that layout pixels are different to onscreen physical pixels (like the iPhone/iPad already does) then we will be back to having sites that fill the available space. However until that happens, we have to put up with big borders.

*sigh*
