Whatever problems Yabbies had with his Barra would have had nothing to do with the Bunnings salt I can assure you of that. I just checked my records and last financial year I used almost 50 bags of the stuff and I would say almost every fish (tens of thousands) at my place was exposed to it at some stage. That includes Trout, Silver Perch and Barra.

What problems were they? I have never heard of anyone having problems.

Salt or other things. The big chain stores don't always carry all the same things country wide.
Here in the USA L and HD will vary from region to region, Heck, sometimes what they carry will be quite different from store to store even in the same city.
So no shock that one region might have dirty salt that causes stains in pools more than in another region. However, I wouldn't really worry about stains in an AP system and there are plenty of other things that can kill fish. Actually, misunderstanding the math involved and salting the system to a drastically wrong level has been responsible for some people killing fish and I don't think that could be blamed on the brand of salt.

And I noticed on an earlier page that some one said to measure salt by the spoon. That is only going to work if the salt in question is like fine grained table salt or something (and I don't recommend using table salt unless you can be certain the anti clumping agents are safe for fish and bacteria and it's not iodized.) If you are using the coarser softener or pool salts, you are not going to be measuring by the tea spoon or table spoon as that will be very inaccurate since the different size grains will mean a totally different amount of salt.

Here's a great article that goes into a great discussion on various salt treatments for koi which is applicable to other species. I've used it for bluegills, yellow perch, smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, and brook, and brown trout with great success.

I don't even know that salt is necessary for fish tanks. I thought it could harm fishes. Now I know something about putting salt on my fish tank.

If you happen to live near the sea, you can simply add seawater. The salt content is about 35 ppt (depending on some local variations) so adding about 8.5% seawater to your system should give you 3 ppt salt. Half that for 1.5 % etc.
