I have been looking at web sites about earthbag building and it seems like a sustainable way to contruct cheap housing if you are prepared to do most of the work yourself. I don't like the chances of getting council approval to build a place like this though. It would be very difficult to get approval to build a house made from sand bags in the suburbs of Australia; maybe it could be done in the country but even then shires are very strict.

Any ideas on how to get a building like this approved for construction in Australia?

Also any opinons on this construction method are welcome.

What sand bag house? All I see is a mound of dirt with grass growing on it...

Jessy I have seen the "Garbage Warrior" documentary and I think Earthships are awesome.

It would be a dream to build a home based on passive design that is energy efficient, off the grid, collects rain water and has an aquaponics system as well.

On a rural block establish some trees, or as someone did in England, build a hay stack and build behind it. Then once trees and grasses are established - as already mentioned - what house?

MacGyver, I am planning pretty much what you want to do but with a more traditional looking house in rammed earth. We are off grid for everything: power, water and sewage.

Dome homes just like at Tatooine! My old friend Obi-Wan Kenobi lived there for a while.
