Hi All,

I'm a very newbie who has just stumbled across this Aquaponics phenomenon. Amazingly I have been in process of setting up a garden patch and also cycling a tiny saltwater aquarium. When I saw the AP concept my mind was made up!

Problem is that I am in Dubai so am considering all the local considerations such as very high daytime temps (+45degC) but that remainder of the year is perfectly suited 20-30degC range. I even have a local supplier for Nile & Red Tilapia super cheap.

I am even considering setting up a little indoors kitchen herb garden with my existing IQ5 small fresh fish tank, would love to hear advice on small/tiny setups.

Hope to chat more in the regular forums.

Hi and welcome to the forum :wave1:

I think talapia would be the best decision for you, especially as there is a supplier in reach.

Start something small and watch it evolve :thumbleft:

I have a feeling that Aquaponics will catch on strong in Dubai. Welcome!

Especially when all the potable water is desalinated and daytime temps reaching +45, they need sustainable solutions and fast

I think it will still be under construction/trials/cycling/testing. Projects have a funny way of being announced and then arbitrary completion dates, but actual completion dates will always be down to many many many factors. They will finish the project when it finishes, and it will cost as much as much as it costs.

But they have a big plan for this region and out of all the surrounding countries I believe they can get this up and running.

btw I am an Aussie working in sustainable architecture out here

Many big AP projects also get anounced and never happen.

A quick update for the project in Abu Dhabi that I mentioned before.

Sept 22, 2012
A year after it was set up, the world's largest aquaponics centre has started to sell salad crops to supermarkets across the UAE and will market its fish in one year's time.

Wow! You don't typically see the science of it explained in news articles.

Would be interested to know what organic chemicals are being used in the tanks to make the plants taste better.

They say 400,000 litres of water which should only be replaced every two years, why replace it?

Might take that long to replace that much water after a mighty big HSM
