To me the bugs looked like tan spots/grey spots on the water's surface (from ~2 feet away)...small things...I'd have thought they were pollen etc.

This is also in Victoria, BC, so maybe there are other bugs around.

I'm planning to try them in the sumps - feed the roots of excess growth to the fish, the leaves/roots of excess growth in a worm compost I might add...and the filter benefits....
