hello all
I have been researching the hell out of aquaponics and I am hooked. I have a background in fabrication and engineering. I have access to quite a few toys. cnc machines. I plan on working on some automated systems using the arduino microcontroller etc. I have found a good company in Brooklyn that have ph, dissolved oxygen, ec, and orp sensors that interface with the arduino. since I am still learning I dont know what systems that you guys would want. any suggestions. I will be designing an android app that interfaces with my system

So now I have been researching fish for michigan. I cant seem to find too much info on this. Any fish recommendations? I was thinking tilapia, catfish, and shrimp to start. Read here that yellow perch is good as well.

I am sourcing my ibc tote and hope to be building my system soon. I would love to add this to the local nonprofit growing hope org around here.

Any tips before I start my venture?

thanks
bryan

Hey Bryan.. :wave1:

Go simple, especially first time round..... Which may kind of negate some of the other things you mentioned.... :)

Welcome Bryan

As EB says, keep your stocking simple the first time and then build up from there.

You'll be wanting yellow perch for the Friday fish fry won't you, or is that only a Wisconsin thing ?

yellow perch is big in michigan too..i've got yp and while they are slow growing, they're pretty tough, but don't like water that's too warm,, i lost a few when the water hit 90f
bluegill are slow growers, but can put up with some pretty bad conditions..
i think michigan recently banned tilapia, but i'm not sure on that..
oh, and there was a small commercial ap setup going on outside detroit.. i'll look for the info..

thanks for the input. didnt know about tilapia being banned. that was defiantly going to be one of them.
my list to start was shrimp, tilapia, catfish, and yellow perch.

hope I can find that place in detroit.

I think aquaponics is going to become an obsession to me
