No... they're more of a "perch"... "Macquaria colonorum"...

But the Bass belong to the same "family"...

From Wiki...

Quote:
It is very similar to and very closely related to its sister species the Australian bass, Macquaria novemaculeata. Key differences in estuary perch are that:
it has a slightly larger mouth and slightly more "scooped" forehead;
it tends to remain in the estuarine reaches or (more rarely) the extreme lower freshwater reaches;
it has a diet with more emphasis on small fish and prawns;
it has a slightly larger growth potential than Australian Bass

You might have trouble obtaining fingerlings... haven't heard of any hatcheries that spawn them...

Ok... apparantly there has been some recent attempts to breed them... and they stocked 7000 in Lake Bolac (Victoria)...this year....

Interestingly....

Quote:
The broodstock were taken by chartered aeroplane to a leading bass farmer in New South Wales, which led to successful spawning and the growing of larvae in purpose-built saline plankton ponds

I'm picking that would be "Searly" up in Yamba... who does a lot of work on "esoteric" species....

I'm curious... so I'll give him a ring and ask him...

If I were where you are it would be Jade Perch all the way. Best tasting fish I have tried out of the aquaponics and your winters shouldnt get cold enough to worry them

Looked up jade perch supplies and I found a few places that would ship here but for my test unit which is currently being made I will buy fish I can find in an aquarium or I might just use yabbies if anyone has any ideas please post your thoughts :)
