HN, Test your water and see if you have nitrates anyway. My tap water starts at 20. Also, I just forced some bulbs in my gravel beds. The bulbs provide most of their own energy and look really nice while things are starting up.

HN, for the benefit of others I will add that I lightly sand the bottom of the standpipe so that it is a firm but moveable fit in the end cap. Each week I rotate the standpipe about 30 degrees to sever any roots.
