I've got a small (10 gal/40 liter) ebb and flow system running now...

I'm putting together a hybrid system...a mix of ebb and flow and DWC.

I'll be using net pots in my raft...there are different sized net pots...

My question is...

What size net pot best suits each vegetable plant?

In other words...

A 2" (50mm) pot is best for...?
A 3" (75mm) pot is best for...?

I'm quite open as to what I'll be growing...I'm definitely going to be growing various kinds of lettuce...but would love some comment here on what size net pot best suits what kind of plant.

I bought 2", 3" round, and 10" square pots. I use the 3" for everything, and the square ones for tomatoes and catalopes. I still haven't used any 2" pots but those were going to be for lettuce.

Note that a lot of plants can reside in a single pot - the back row on the right in this picture is four 3" net pots with lettuce plants in them!

Any reason you haven't used the 2" pots?

Do you germinate in net pots? Or do you start the seeds out in something else and transplant? Also, do you use rockwool to germinate? Or something else?

Anyone else out there want to share your experience using the various size net pots?

Sorry missed your post, I never got around to the 2" because I drilled holes for the 3" pots for larger plants and haven't made any for the 2" yet. Yes I direct seed most of the time in the pots, but I was having so-so luck and to improve the odds I got some rockwool and am trying to germinate in that first then moving to the net pots, which reminds me I need to check on those forgot about them they're on the dog crate in the garage LOL.

i used some 2" net pots my first year, in the top tanks of a "travis hughey" style barrelponics system, and they worked fine

Keith...what did you plant in your 2" pots?

i had mostly different lettuce varieties.. started some brussel sprouts, but they got attacked by bugs.. if i remember right, i had rocket and arugala as well in the pots..

Keith...I've never heard of "rocket"...what is it?

It's a Sativa... sometimes known as "arugula".. and various other names...

An annual... a salad plant... slightly peppery....

Has become a must ingredient in modern salads... especially in yuppie salads... :

I reckon rocket (Eruca sativa) may be called rocket because of the speed at which it grows - very fast! The downside is that it goes straggly quite quickly, as well, so should probably be planted every few weeks in order to maintain a supply.
It is often called rocket lettuce but I believe it is actually a member of the mustard family. As RupertofOz says, it has a very popular peppery flavour. When you bite into it, PastorKev, you will feel like you have a mouthful of fire and brimstone!

A lettuce that has a peppery taste to it, sounds really good...I'm a huge fan of spicy foods.

Whilst growing up, rocket was also known as "driveway lettuce" as it grew as a weed in the cracks in the driveway, and no amount of hot water or glyphosate could ever stop it!
