This is my first ever potatoe harvest. Not in bags but just in our conventional garden. The taste is really fresh and earthy. Sorry can't remember the name of them.

 From memory Charlie you planted from the spuds in your pantry and given that they are white skinned and we have so few varieties in WA I think they are Delawares.

Did another earthing up at the start of last week. Still enough room for another 5cm of dirt in each bag, so might go another earthing up if needed. Actually, I think i've already added a bit more to the white bag.

My other seed potatoes were sprouting some a week or two back, so I buried them. They still haven't broken ground though.

I am trying Don's idea of putting half Yam's (sweet potato) in some water to sprout, have half a potato in the same water and it seems to have helped it start sprouting. I have a few store bought ones in my cupboard that have started sprouting (god hands you one sometimes), so once the seed potatoes currently on the go break ground I will plant these other potatoes as the last of the season.

I like to leave the top of the sprouts showing when I plant them and they take off quickly. I might even uncover the sprouts a little.
I did not have mulch to use to cover mine up and they are just getting to the end. the plants are falling over so will probably die pretty quick.

Mine are just now popping through the dirt. Planted the rest of the ones in the bag plus one sweet potatoe sprout that was growing roots in a jelly jar. Gave them all a good watering today since we haven't had rain for a week.

The second lot of potatoes i put in (the certified seeds) finally broke ground this week. Hope to keep updating on each earth-up on both crops and will summarise important dates/milestones, the length of growing season, and the input vs yield.

If I fall off the radar before then someone will have to give me a nudge.

Store bought ones that I'm trying to chitte in a small container of water as Donone described are cracking along, getting good sprouts. They are sitting outside in the sun/elements, their brothers are still in the plastic bag at the back of the pantry and are also sprouting. I'll see which ones have the best sprouts before I plant them in a few weeks.

Bugs have also started to have a go at the leaves of my first batch. Cant find catapillers, so I'm not sure what is doing it. I dont consider it significant enough to worry about at this stage though.

This thread has inspired me to have a go at it and I have recently tried to start off some store bought potatoes in some 'patio bags' i got on clearance a while ago.. have kept the last couple each out of a bag of nadine, kestral, and cashmere gold..

Have you had a look at night with a torch? We had earwigs eating everything in our dirt patch and i was out there at night for months squishing earwigs. Then we got chooks, problem solved :thumbleft:
