Hey everybody,

I've been curious about aquaponics since my friend Anthony Faircloth started Sustainable Missions in 2008.

I just started my first aquaponics effort in my basement.

It's an ebb and flow, 10 gallon aquarium, 10 gallon grow bed...
I have 4 goldfish supplying 3 tomato plants, 3 cucumber plants, 2 lettuce plants and several green onions.

I've been doing the API water tests for the past 2 1/2 to 3 weeks. The ammonia has spiked, the nitrite is about to spike (2.0 ppm), and the nitrate level is picking up.

My next phase is to gradually work with 20 75 gallon aquariums (I got'em dirt cheap)...as I can afford to build the grow beds I'll increase the number of aquariums until I use all 20.

Anyway...it's good to be part of a community of AP'ers,
Kev

you should find all the information you need right here.

If you get the time, we'd all appreciate a couple of photos of your setup.

Just an update, if you commented here and are following the thread...

My system completed the nitrification cycle and the tomato and cuke plants survived the process...they are actually thriving!

My lettuce isn't quite making it...and the green onions I planted by seed are gone.

The fish are doing great...the only filter of the water being the grow bed media and the plants...the only aeration in the fish tank (10 gallon aquarium) being the periodic download of water from the auto bell siphon.

Thanks for your encouragement!
