I grew up with milk straight from the vat.. especially the cream off the top for my morning porridge...

And my mum worked as a nurse in the TB ward... so we got tested constantly... 40 years later.. and I'm still standing.... :D

For many decades... all milk has essentially been "sterilised" at the shed anyway... being heated and cooled... primarily for mastitis, e-coli etc... than anything else...

Usually the tanker collected the milk from the farm.. before it had really cooled...

But pastuerisation...is only one of the processes used to produce modern milk... the other is "homogenisation"... . is the process of combine the fat content.. into a homogenous content....

TB, mastitis and other things... are totally different...

I think you are talking about homogenization.

I wonder what the ratio is of people who consume raw milk without issues to the people who have contracted infection from the milk.

Homogenization... Homogenisation... probably depends what spell checker you have on...

The difference is the same... :D

Bit like the current Labor and Liberal Parties... spelt slightly different.. but in reality there's no real difference...

Probably bugger all these days...

Probably more reasons to be concerned about the "permeate" that might be in it...

Oh sorry! I totally misread what you wrote. I thought you were saying pasteurisation was homogenisation...

IMO it is not the government responsibilty to ration what I put into my body. If I decide the risk is worth it, I should be able to drink it. We all know smoking will kill you, but that is perfectly legal (note I am not saying smoking should be illegal). I am for people making their own choices, a true libertarian.

It's pretty unlikely a good dairy would be the cause of an outbreak of TB or almost any other disease unless someone was getting sloppy.

People who get sick have a nasty tendency to blame anyone but themselves, especially where money is concerned. I wonder if selling raw milk is really viable without protection from the government against lawsuits?

Thats right scotty.
Regulations or no regulations it is not in the best interests of a dairy to poison its customers anyway. I'm pretty sure that would be bad for business :D

Your last sentence isn't making sense to be though. There is no protection for raw milk sellers, quite the opposite.

The issue though is that if anyone gets sick from pasteurised milk from the big companies, the sick person would find it much more difficult (assuming direct causal proof is found) to sue for damages because they were following "regulations"
Whether or not the regulations were strict enough or not, the companies are protected because they followed them.
This is what I see as the problem. Its hard to know if a regulations is strict enough or too strict.
If we just stick to defence of peoples rights, many regulations can be discarded.

Hey earthbound before you get all conspiracy theory accusing, ask Australia's cattlemen about government destruction of an industry. That decision has now killed profitabile pricing in all meat industries in Australia and that is a fact. Lamb, beef and pork all down more than 50% in a year at the farmgate. Fortunately for those who don't like conspiracies, they will still pay the piper down at the supermarket.

There is war against the animal proteins industry globally and it is for one simple fact. Grain farmers like me are going to struggle to feed the world even if you all became vegetarian let alone providing the feed grains for the third world to be able to eat meat.

Aquaponics is a fairly efficient system but at the end of the day it relies on grain and that will ultimately be its achilles heel.

I always keep an open mind. With Juliar Gillard as a PM who wouldn't?

well, I quite like the right to choose to buy bath milk and drink it if I so choose.

I like the right to be able to buy free-range meat directly from the producer. I like the right to be able to buy fruit and veg that is labelled with it's regional source. I like NOT having to give all our money to Woolies or Coles.

Sorry guys, I am a closet stockpiler (literally, the closet is full of food supplies) and I don't like having to rely on food that has travelled 3000km in a big round trip to get to my kitchen.
