Just wanted to offer folks some insight into my grow bed build ..

the build is based on this youtube video that is pretty popular on this side:

So here are some corresponding pictures... This is going to be an indoor aquaponic garden.

8x4x1.5' or so...

Hey IceCreamStPete:

According to my calculations (gravel is 16 pounds per square foot I think) if you're using gravel this will weigh more than 750 pounds, is this on a concrete slab floor?

So, I was thinking about that myself...

It's on a tile floor, and I really don't know if this setup will support what I'm trying to do...

at 6x4x1 this is 24 cubic feet, and a cubic yard is 27 cubic feet... so this is just under 2 tons at only one foot deep... that's not counting if I make it deeper...

How disappointing :-(

Hydroton is just soooo expensive.

How often does it need to be replaced?

Hydroton should not need replacing, take in to consideration that at lest 40% of your growled will be water and the weight involved. Medium + water = ?

when i calculate i go by water weight as a total, i use hydroton in my beds and figure hydroton floats when it's dry so water weight will be more

i'm scrapping the project in it's current form. Thanks for all the help though, I just need to go back to the drawing board and determine a better location for this build.

Thanks!
