Hi all!!

New to the site and new to the Aquaponics thing, so figured i'd drop in and say hi. Belleye recommended this site to me, and after looking around and browsing the PDF i'm definitely going to get a system going of my own.

So i've managed to procure myself 3 good IBC's which have had a water soluble non harmful dust suppressant in them and i'm ready to get going!!

My plan is to use 2 of the IBC's as tanks and the 3rd IBC to make 2 grow beds. I want to start simple and expand from there which i know will happen, once i get it started and established.

Going to look at one tank with Redclaw and Cherabin as they are quite prevalent up here, but not sure what to put in the other... Barra isn't really something i will eat from the tank as i can just go catch a saltwater barra pretty much all year round, so i think i will look at something else but i'm really not sure what. Trout would be cool, but i'm not sure if they would be ok in this climate or even if i could get them here. I will have to do my research and see what is available from Cairns. Maybe Perch will be an option...

Anyways i'm keen to get started and i will post up pics as my system takes shape!!

Cheers!!
Chris

Thanks for the info on the fish. Definitely looks like the Jade's will be the way to go, and prices look pretty reasonable from Ausyfish too. Will definitely look at that once i get my system established!!

Question... How many fish would you have to the standard IBC?

Also from my OP, it looks like my Cherabin idea is a fail, as they are aggressive to each other, but all good, i found a redclaw supplier in Atherton (http://www.aquaverde.com.au/) which will be awesome for getting my second tank started. Jade Perch in one, Redclaw in the other.

how many fish you can stock... is directly related to how much filtration you have in your system.... not your fish tank volume...

Mate, when you say filtration, your talking about the grow bed media? In the plans i've seen for the single IBC systems i haven't seen any filters thats all...

thats right... the media is your filter. Bio-filter. :thumbright:

We recommend about 20-25 (to plate size/500g) fish per 500L of filtration/media.

Hi guys, been hard at work setting up my system and am real close to getting it up and running.

Learnt my first real lesson in preparation though and that is, the need to think about the weight of your grow bed. My first table was no where near up to spec and i've just totally pulled down the system cause i'm not happy with "good enough"...

She's now looking the goods though with sole plates, bracing and plenty of weight distribution.

Now i just need to get this system cycling clean... I've decided on using Bauxite for my system (The reason Weipa is on the map) because it's readily available and cheap, but it needs a good clean and it's taking a bit of work flushing and reflushing but she's almost settled down to a usable state.

Going with redclaw too cause Ausyfish are out of Jades. Went and grabbed a few from a local creek to try out first, just need the water to clear!!

Going well though, will post pics soon in the members system threads.
