I'll be very interested to see if your new purchase turns out better, Di. I've run into the same type of issue in getting the feeder goldfish to stay alive. I've gotten the small ones (1"), the medium (1.5") and even the large ones (2") but same results. Within a month all are gone.

I was thinking of getting koi instead the next time I need to restock.

6.10.12 Very happy with this.....

The fish are lively and doing well.... eating well, swimming around good. I have found a new store to get my fish from.

Readings:

Temp 75f
pH 7.2
ammonia 0.25
nitrite 0.25
nitrate somewhere between 20-40... (darker than 20 but not quite as dark as 40)

I lost one of the smaller comets this morning. Took a water test and here are the numbers.
I have a question... is a pH of 7.4 healthy for both fish and plants?

pH 7.4
ammonia 0.25
nitrite 0
nitrate 5.0
Temp still steady at 75(F)

Hope you all have a wonderful weekend and for the dads out there, happy father's day!

the water was too warm for comets and koi (which should not be put together because koi will bully the comets... I had a couple of comets that they ate the fins off of darn it - I did not know when I mixed them)... I had it at 75 but they are doing MUCH better in cooler water. I have 3 koi and 2 comets that have made it through... not sure if they will continue but they are doing ok right now.

Is a pH of 7.4 good for BOTH fish and plants?

Thanks :)

I think I made it!!!!!!!
My water readings are holding steady at
pH 7.4
ammonia 0.25
nitrite 0
nitrate 5.0
temp 70f
3 koi and 2 comets and have not lost any in over 3 weeks.
I think I will go with these fish through summer and then look into tilapia later.

My plants are all growing nicely but I got 3 beans off one plant and nothing else has come in on them and I have about 10 blossoms on one yellow squash but nothing has bloomed yet and
I never did get any flowers on my roma tomato plant... it is forever tall but it is not flowering.
The rest of the plants have no sign of blooms/flowers or anything so I guess it is not time for them yet (bell pepper, cucumbers, other tomatoes, other beans)

Never the less, I am very happy with my constant water readings.

Hope you all had a wonderful 4th (for those who observe it)
